Sorry, Adult Industry, but No One Is Going to Pay for Porn

From Nerve.com: http://www.nerve.com/love-sex/sorry-...o-pay-for-porn

From the article: "Last week, porn publishers Adult Empire, along with a number of adult stars, announced the launch of Pay For Your Porn, an online (and mostly Twitter-based) campaign intended to shame consumers into abandoning pirated porn. It's the same message that members of the industry have been trumpeting for years online, in interviews, and in pre-roll PSAs on porn DVDs. Piracy hurts the people who make porn, and anyone who enjoys consuming the product should pay for it. In principle, I agree with the sentiment. But it's hard for me to shake the feeling that #PayForYourPorn is doomed to fail, and that porn would be better off giving up the guilt trip and accepting that free porn is, for the most part, the new normal."

And check out the comments; the first two bitch about credit card fraud.

You'd be an idiot to pay for porn now

At the end of the day, some of us can sell ice to Eskimos and some of us just haven't filled out their application for McDonalds.

Smart boy.
Go out and win in life. Trying to "win" on a chat board when your real life is shit doesn't impress any of us.

Yup, whoever's running that little campaign obviously has no PR experience. As I've said elsewhere it's pretty tone-deaf, and the #PayForYourPorn hashtag sort of sounds like a parental scold - #EatYourVegetables #ThisIsYourBrainOnDrugs etc.

Rather than futilely guilt tripping the public, we need to be identifying the demographics that *do* buy and how to best reach them, and the different kinds of content and user experiences that entices them to do so. There's still a market out there, it's just much tighter than the free-for-all of online porn's golden era. IMO during that golden era a lot of people entered the industry without any real marketing chops or creativity, but because the climate was so forgiving they could simply follow an established formula and have success. Now those days are over, now they flounder, because they were never the types to experiment and innovate and refine in the first place.

:1orglaugh yup my mom raised me right! She told me to ALWAYS pay for your porn. :2 cents:

SpicyM 05-17-2014 03:34 PM

People always want fresh porn and fresh porn is not gonna be filmed for free. Someone has to pay for it one way or another.. the market will clear itself and only serious producers will survive, which is good. Too many crap companies damaged the industry reputation in the past.

The problem is momentum and trends. The amount of people paying is less than 3 years ago. That in turn is less than five years ago. The trend then suggests three years from now even less will be willing to pay.

Part of the reason why better minds aren't around in that side of the industry is probably because they saw the trends long ago and decided to leave long ago. They can sell another product instead with an upward trend and a future as opposed to fighting it.

For a long time there were probably people still trying to sell horse carriages too after the car came out. But no matter how smart they were or how hard they tried eventually their business was destined to decline. Not to say that it's impossible. Even today some people still buy horse carriages. It's just not the same market it was 125 years ago though.

You (the industry) are publishing the fresh porn for free still on the tubes. And then the pirates are also publishing it on file lockers, forums and torrents.

If you suggest here that people should not be publishing their porn for free on tubes, even 10 minute videos, most people here will laugh at you and call you names.

Well, tubes are not for sites with 30 videos in the members area, nor they are for shitty paysite. But the branding opportunities on tubes are huge and if your content is original, exclusive and fresh, you can do very well.

2003 when I started had simple text link TGP's with minimal but high quality targeted traffic making 1-x, 1-xxx consistent sign up ratios. Ratios may have swung up a little but can still do well if you focus on quality targeted traffic over quantity bullshit traffic and target Niche sites.

Today most of my adult income comes from Cams and Niche sites. Money still to be made you just gotta adapt to the changing landscape as applying 2003 formulas in 2014 will just leave you lying on your couch saying "those were the days". Invest+Analyze+Tweak=Success Applying the same techniques and expecting different results=Fail I've also invested adult income into mainstream projects over the years just as a backup as I figure small-medium streams of income from all directions is less risky than 1 major stream.

Rochard 05-17-2014 04:34 PM

People are still paying for porn.

A campaign to remind people to pay for porn only only informs others that they can get it for free.

SomeCreep 05-17-2014 04:36 PM

Porn is free. It's free because we make it free. So complaining about that is pointless. As far as I'm concerned, we can all go fuck ourselves.

Great way to tarnish a brand :2 cents:

Firstly in the grown up world you don't fight criminality with criminality, secondly you don' trash your brand by giving people viruses, whether they pay for a product or not.

Barry-xlovecam 05-18-2014 07:16 AM

95% of the internet users cannot afford to pay for porn or won't pay for porn.

5% can afford to pay for what they want ...

We are all just competing for that 5%.

Fuck the 95% -- you cannot sell them anything anyway ... D'oh

VikingMan 05-18-2014 07:45 AM

I could sit everyone of those porn performers down and explain to them how to make a bucket load of money but not one of them would listen. They want instant gratification. After a day on set swallowing sperm they take that fucking check DIRECTLY to the counter of the bank and cash it. That is their thinking. They would rather make $100k a year doing it that way then make $300k+ a year looking ahead and building up to something big that makes money while they sleep.

Entertain me. I'm waiting for my flight to take off.

newdipshit 05-18-2014 04:47 PM

Some do pay..

I have a hard time believing that no one pays for porn anymore... My wife is a cam model on MFC. She works 4 hour shifts 4 days a week and averages $1000.00 a week.

That being said... There are always plenty of guys in her room who never tip.... The suckers.. She makes her money off of about 10% or less of the guys who watch her shows...

I think it is just so much easier to get free porn now days that if you are trying to sell the same shit everyone else is selling you wont.

I am brand new to this industry and I can see that I am not going to be walking around picking up giant wads off cash as they fall from the sky in front of me... But I'm not scared :)

Quite a few of us that have been slinging smut for 10+ years have shifted to Cams, Dating and Niche sites over the years as the old school easily copied cookie cutter bullshit won't retain old school day ratios. :2 cents:

I think that the people who don't pay for porn, but like to watch it free really don't know what they are missing out on.

Pay sites are absolutely amazing, and the content is so much better, newer, higher res, etc etc..

I wish there was some way to let people know just what they are missing out on.

The scenes on the tubes within hours. The end user can't wait 2 hours to see the "better" stuff?

Most people aren't going to care because they don't take masturbation as seriously as you do.

QFT. This is why we need to understand that we've totally lost all the people who just want a quick wank. We need to identify the demographics that enjoy content beyond just a 5-minute masturbation session, usually this means emphasizing the niche route far more than used to be the case. There's still money to be made there. But vanilla porn is pretty much left going after high volume (and that math gets worse each year).

Men still pay for porn and there is still a fair amount of money that can be made.

Hower the Internet is a shit for distribution and digital is just too easy to steal.

A producer can create the best film in the world but if he puts it on the Internet or on a format (aka, digital) then his film is destined to be a loss leader or pirated.
