What video player should I use for my site?
I have JW player built into the site right now and the videos lag like crazy... play.. buffer..play.. buffer.. Like 10 min to play a 3 min vid.
The vids are mp4 and my html guy say's they have to be because .FLV will not play on iphones.. But my tour section needs to play vids better. Should I compress the vids in the tour section so they are a bit smaller or should I be using a different player all together? Thanks for any advice! |

That's not the player doing that.

too big?
Hmmm.. perhaps my vids are too big on the tour page..
Here is a sample and it's lagging off of Mediafire too.. I can't link to the site yet, it's in ccbill review at the moment. http://www.mediafire.com/watch/cn6p5...39xw/Video.mp4 Should I try compressing them a bit?? |
Flash
I am bouncing through some other tour pages right now... They are flash and will not play on my iphone, only my PC... But that is looking to be the norm..

Didn't check your specs, but the Mediafire video streamed just fine for me. Couldn't jump ahead, but the video buffered fast enough that it did not time-out or hang. :2 cents: :stoned ADG |
Should really be using an HTML5 video container with a Flash/JWPlayer fallback, in my opinion. That way you cover everything without needing to do extra work :)
As I don't know what your sites are, if tour vids are constantly buffering that could simply mean crappy hosting/server/peering/uplink or all of the above. Now, you don't need a Godzilla powerful server to stream videos but if you're on shared hosting it's obviously a bad idea. That sample video is nice quality, but you can easily compress it by 50% http://www.trollenstein.com/re-encoded-test.mp4 (26MB Re-encode Vs. 52MB Original) so it's worth playing about with encoding options as not only should you show the very best quality vids on your tour (as people will assume if the tour contains crappy quality the members area also will!), but will drastically reduce your bandwidth usage, and small sizes = faster downloads = happier visitors etc. Just make sure ALL the video meta data is at the start for smoother pseudo-streaming etc :) |
Great info keep it coming! Flash is dead folks.

Thanks!
