U.S. Military's 'Iron Man' Suit Prototype Debuts This Month

Move over, Tony Stark ? the military could soon have its own "Iron Man" suit, a robotic exoskeleton designed to augment human abilities on the battlefield.

A prototype of the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, will be available later this month, and a more complete version should be ready between 2016 and 2018, according to Battelle, a science and technology research institute headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

"How do you protect against direct action engagement?" said John Folkerts, vice president for the special operations market group at Battelle. To protect troops in combat, soldiers must have access to better armor, better protection and better communication, Folkerts told Live Science. [Humanoid Robots to Flying Cars: 10 Coolest DARPA Projects]

In addition to the TALOS, Battelle is helping develop other innovative technologies such as robotic underwater vehicles, digital "heads-up" displays and a de-icing aircarft coating. The nonprofit research and development organization displayed some of these technologies at a U.S. Special Forces industry conference held May 20-22 in Tampa, Florida.

Being former military it's interesting to see the differences in how troops go to battle now... Now they have assault rifles that can shoot around corners. (not kidding)

yep just think when they do drones that are palm size. its going to tech wars now

druid66 05-27-2014 10:16 AM

exoskeletons and more elitists army are unevitable future.
those who won't afford it will be no longer part of this racing.

btw: "In Greek mythology, Talos (/ˈtɑːlɵs/; Greek: Τάλως, Talōs) or Talon (/ˈtɑːlɵn/; Greek: Τάλων, Talōn) was a giant man of bronze who protected Europa in Crete from pirates and invaders. He circled the island's shores three times daily."

from wiki, sounds about right ;)

crockett 05-27-2014 10:46 AM

For every high tech advancement there is usually a low tech counter. While I do enjoy seeing some of the hi tech stuff the military comes up with, it on the other hand makes sure that no one fights our military head to head.

Instead of trying to go up against our tanks, drones, aircraft, ect..ect.. they just look to weaker spots which usually revolve around civilian targets.

I think iron wouldn't be used as material anyway,as there are better and easier materials.

Yay, a whole new batch of toys to play with. Now we just need another war to serve as 'playroom' and they can test it all out.

Must be like Christmas morning over at the Pentagon.

Actually, yes they do, I read about it years ago, its a bullet that explodes at just the right point to take out a shooter that's hiding around a corner. Popular Science is were I read about it.

No, the military does not have or utilize an assault rifle that shoots around corners, which was what was stated.

The article you refer to mentions smart bullets and th exm25 system, that system uses proximity grenades in operation, not the smart bullets, which still need dev.

dyna mo 05-27-2014 12:53 PM

here's the xm25, but it doesn't shoot around corners.

fucking US klingon idiots and their weapons...it is sad that US corporate politics and bullshit wars are the mark of this century...the USA is what is wrong with the world today...

dyna mo 05-27-2014 02:31 PM

Yes, I understand the weapon exists, my comment was in regards to it being used by our military, because it's not. It's barely used by any swat team here.

Ok, I thought they would have done it by now, seems like a cool concept

My lord people like to argue.

I did not say "The US military has a rifle that shoots around corners". In fact, I did not mention a group, military branch, or country. My comment was more about what technology exists, not who was using it.

With that said, you can be pretty sure that the US Military has played with it already.

So come and do something about it.

Phoenix 05-27-2014 04:05 PM

That is cool. I saw the striding suits a few years ago. Mostly for desert warfare. I am sure they are using the invisibility suits on these striders by now also. Drop the guy off 20kms away, he sprints into his location, takes pictures drops a bomb, kills some people whatever the mission is. Then strides out, never seen.

It wasn't my intent to argue........I think it's fair to say this could be read such that you're saying that you've noticed the difference in how troops go to battle........then you went on to say that difference is assault rifles that shoot around corners.

:)

yep.

I am appalled at the war promotion and conditioning on tv as well. All those shows about weapons and war technology and how 'awesome' it is. I saw a show about a new tank with cameras and greater accuracy, and the guy talking about it was smiling and saying 'wow I wish I had this when I was fighting' , which is someone talking with a big smile how he would love to kill other people with great accuracy. These shows completely ignore the realities of war and condition people how it's cool.

my advice to americans is to try to avoid distasteful posts where you parade your weapons for attacking the 3rd world if you want to avoid negative backlash...

its the equivalent of north korea parading its nukes..."look what we are going to hit you with next" should be the title of this post...

these weapons will not be used to "protect america" because you have nukes and nobody will ever attack you ever...and you know it...

they will be used to kill 3rd world people who were force drafted because US corporate politics needs 3rd world resources and global power play...

also americans are fully aware of this but would rather feel safe and turn a blind eye...

the USA Is what is wrong with the world today...you are in 90% of the worlds conflicts and bombs and war is your main export...

but getting a north korean or american to admit their great country is a pile of shit is futile LOL I really must be off my meds LOL

fyi brainiac war was around long before America and guess what, in those 1000s of years of human dev it didn't go away dumbass.

America didn't event war, our propaganda isn't what makes people need violence, that shit's been a part of human nature since day 1 , and war would still exist even if America didn't.

stop being so obtuse just so you can point your finger at USA.

druid66 05-28-2014 06:50 AM

best 250 hundread years in human (known) history, also called "golden age" was when?

when bad, bad Rome conquered practically everything around it and created empire.
over 250 years of no war, peacful life, safe travelling and safety at all on all conquered dominias.

since then there was no such period in (known) human history again.

all thanks to one empire which previously dominated all their neighboors by force.

so far there's no better way to maintain peace than arming ourself.

the USA has privatized war and your corporate government makes bank on it and you know it...humans having the capacity for violence as a counter argument is like saying "well people have always bled when stabbed with knives"...the USA perpetuates violence and war...nobody will ever ever ever ever ever attack the USA because it has nukes...the USA is 100% safe from any invasion ever ever ever...you all know this...

the USA is 5% of the worlds population but is in 90% of the conflicts...how very very very convenient for the weapons manufacturers and the US Army...you spend 100s of billions of dollars every year, and growing, to "defend" something that nobody will ever invade LOL...

do you feel stupid when the truth is so fucking obviously against your arguments? :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

ironman soldiers be poppin' third world be droppin' :1orglaugh except when it happens on US soil then it is just such a TERRIBLE crime LOL...robot killer army for outside USA? no problem! pressure cooker in marathon? OMG this is WMD!!!!!!...

its just the double standard you have that makes it impossible for you to understand what I am talking about because you would have to know what a single standard is and this is like explaining color to the blind :1orglaugh you simply do not understand LOL

was watching "non stop" with liam neeson the other day and theres this muslim guy on a plane and most people are giving him the racial stereotype look, and I burst out laughing at the comedy of the situation, the worlds #1 bomb droppers, who have dropped more bombs than hitler since ww2: WHITE AMERICANS be tripping out when they see a member of a race that is not even in the same league as the white guys LOL

how fucking funny is that? LOL

you would perhaps understand if russia started parading its bio weapons...you would not say "oh good this will bring peace to the world"...but when your corporate robot army is ready im sure you will be happy...

yes this is a show meant specifically for you guys..."fuck off klingons or else"...but the difference is they will not use this on you...the tone of the parade is "fuck off USA" it is not "we are going to use this next on you"

on the other hand the iron man suits WILL be used 100% mother fucking guaranteed on 3rd world people like me...the thread is nothing short of an alquaida video announcing further terrorism because of the source it comes from: USA, the most terrorist nation ever, arabs cant hold a candle...

it is conditioning the US people to be ok with their corporate army "iron manning" the 3rd world...it is an announcement...unlike the parade in russia which is more of a declaration of independence from the US corporate government...

What might be easier and cheaper is a method to create a small Electromagnetic Pulse. The Iron man suits have electronics and computers built into them. An EMP would cause the computers to crash, freezing the suits in their tracks.
