Anyone got a 'Curved' LCD TV?

This kinda thing? LINK

Any good or just a gimmick? I know I can go to a TV store and see for myself, but naturally a TV store will have it set up in optimal conditions to sell the product - As opposed to a real life scenario...

So any opinions from current owners?

CurrentlySober 06-14-2014 01:41 AM

No One???

Not something available in America perhaps?

ottopottomouse 06-14-2014 02:34 AM

Won't you have to sit quite close to get the surround effect from the curve?

Actually most stores have them in horrible conditions under full fluorescent lighting. Sometimes they even come in a "store" mode which I assume makes them brighter to compensate for lighting and probably disables some features.
The real benefit is the 4k resolution rather than the curved effect.

Probably just a gimmick. Like 3D.

4K on the other hand looks incredible. Seen a few tv's with running demos and it just looks amazing!

My kids fucking love watching 3D cartoons, but for us adults it's meh.

I don't understand the point in a "curved" TV.

I really don't see how its a good idea. I'm sure its great viewing by yourself but after worrying about getting viewing angles to increase for so many years for group viewing it's strange to suddenly start making tvs you want to sit dead center for. I couldn't justify getting one.. maybe for gaming only in the rec room. Im currently deciding between a 70" lcd or a good 1080p 3d projector. I've seen some good 4k tvs but there's just fuck all content for them. You have to watch the same 3 movies over and over again. By the time you can watch a bunch of stuff they'll be down to $2.50

They appear to be available in the UK, cause they are constantly advertised.... But I wouldn't want to go '4K'... YET - Cause theres not really any 'product' that can live up to the spec...

For example - I have probably the best TV package available in the UK... BUT... While 1080 HD is available at the touch of a button... (Even D/L via the net connection to my paid provider) - Will 4K Be the same in a few years? Or in a few years - Would the tech be better than now????

Point being though, its NOT really about 4K... It's NOT really about 3D... Its 100% about the 'Curved Screen' :)

Is your vision UHD? Yes. Is your vision wide? Yes.
Is your vision curved? No.

Me either. I *think* movie screens in cinemas are curved because the distance between the projector lens in a big theatre would be shorter in the centre and further at the edges of a flat screen, and would be impossible to focus properly unless the screens were curved. This of course would not be the case on a flat panel TV, so what whatever the point is, it's lost on me.

I heard that Netflix may be testing 4k content soon, but I think it would suck because even their 1080 content is over compressed, just like Satellite & cable content. The best possible picture you can get is with Blue Ray and until they start coming out with lots of 4K BR content, a 4K TV would be too much fun.

I never bought a 3D TV. To me I was trading 3D for a crappier picture. Even in the threaters, most 3D movies suck unless they are shot in 3D, take the brightness issue into consideration during post, displayed in IMAX with true shutter 3D Glasses. If you decide to go to the movies, Always choose IMAX 3D over the crappy low-rent "RealD 3D" format. RealD is dark, crappy no-D.
