Looks like Starbucks isn't actually paying for worker's college...we are.

By we I mean taxpayers.

I just read this article that said the President of ASU clarified that Starbucks isn't actually putting any of its own money into this program. Instead the university is lowing the costs on some things and will make up the difference with various federal aid packages.

Schultz was on The Daily Show the other day hamming it up. It seemed a little fishy to me from the jump.

How do you conclude that taxpayers are paying for the program? That's not what I got from that article.

dyna mo 06-19-2014 09:24 PM

I'm also surprised you cast such a shadow over federal college aid programs.

eh gfy though, i get it. ;

If it comes from federal aid then it comes from tax dollars.

I am all for federal money going to college educations. However, I would like to see colleges give price breaks to anyone, especially those who are working and trying to put themselves through school and not just Starbucks employees.

It just kind of annoys me when Starbucks makes it seem like they are funding it when in reality they just cut a deal.

That is very disappointing to hear. Typical corporate propaganda ass-fucking for sure but still disappointing.

Time to switch to Dunkin' Donuts?

Yep and saved themselves the 1k a year in tuition reimbursement they used to give employees.

Typical of Starbucks. Glad they are hurting.

Ohhh I wish I could. Out of the places available to me the one with coffee that sucks the least is Starbucks.

Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of EdVisors.com, a website about paying for college, said the program could benefit all parties involved. Workers could get a chance at a degree from Arizona State University at a reduced rate. Arizona State could get a revenue boost from federal aid and out-of-pocket costs workers and Starbucks later pays. And Starbucks could attract a better pool of workers and burnish it's corporate image.

Seems to me that they did a fine job marketing, the government is paying no more than it would have paid otherwise hd the result is more people will make use of lower cost online educational options. That will put pressure on brick and mortar private colleges to lower their absurdly high tuition prices. Which will be a win for everyone eventually.

the article states the students are responsible for their tuition. they can make up the difference out of pocket and/or apply for federal aid, just like every other college student in America.

and federal college aid is typically in the form of a loan, loans are paid back with interest. student loans are no exception.

I don't get it, starbucks uses it's weight to get a deal on education for their employees and that's a bad thing because that deal should be given to everybody. :upsidedow

Bill Gates could cure cancer tomorrow and the headline would be "Bill Gates now richest man in the world for curing cancer!" with a comment section full of outrage.

I'm not saying it is a bad thing. I am just saying that Starbucks was a little scummy to advertise it as if they were the ones paying for this when in reality it is ASU that is doing most of the giving by lowering costs and helping the students with financial aid.
