UN Hiring ?Disarmament? Officers for the United States
http://www.thewestwire.com/un-disarm...united-states/ "Within the listings of open positions on the United Nation?s career page is a relatively new posting seeking applications for a Disarmament, Demobilization, and Re-integration (DDR) officer for the New York duty station of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). The job listing is advertised as being financed for a year at least, where the DDR officer will be utilized in the ?planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of DDR programmes, operations and other related activities in the country or region concerned.? While the posting doesn?t state the position being located within another country, it leaves one to assume the ?country or region concerned? is New York City, USA. It should be noted, however, that the UN is located in New York, as well as the DPKO?s main offices. Recruitment for any geographical location going through these locations is conceivable , but similar postings for DDR officers list the duty station as being in countries other than the, US rather than using the New York offices of the DPKO as a generic designation. To better understand the concern of this job posting, one needs to better understand what the duties of a DDR officer entail. The United Nation?s information page regarding the officers describe DDR responsibilities as crucial components to the stabilization of ?warn-torn? societies. In addition to the initial roles as stablization agents, DDR programs are thought, by the United Nations, to be a ?must? throughout the entire peace process which extends through conflict all the way until ?peace-building activities.? Basically, they state their roles as a necessity during times of conflict. Further down the page the United Nations details their definitions of the duties associated with each letter of the DDR officer?s title: Disarmament is the collection, documentation, control and disposal of small arms, ammunition, explosives and light and heavy weapons from combatants and often from the civilian population. Demobilization is the formal and controlled discharge of active combatants from armed forces and groups, including a phase of ?reinsertion? which provides short-term assistance to ex-combatants. Reintegration is the process by which ex-combatants acquire civilian status and gain sustainable employment and income. It is a political, social and economic process with an open time-frame, primarily taking place in communities at the local level." Continued http://www.thewestwire.com/un-disarm...united-states/ |
