I think the energy industry also played a role. Use of CFL bulbs enabled them to deliver less electricity to consumers while at the same time jacking up rates. The energy consumption difference between incandescent and CFL is pure profit for the electricity company.

Most of them are smart/great bans, especially tanning, shopping bags and bulbs (no conspiracy there as consumer SAVES money + saving energy).

How so? Lets say 15W bulb VS 100W bulb is 6 times. Did they raise electricity price by 6 times? You do not make much sense.

Factor in the major sources of energy use in the home. They didn't have to raise rates much to make up for the difference in lighting costs on your bill. Not when the AC unit for instance is 3,000 to 4,000 watts.

Because there is a set amount of electricity entering your home and something has to use it. If not the bulbs, then it goes straight to the AC unit.

They have an agreement with the greys to keep X amount of electricity flowing throw the power lines so that ships can hover over the lines and take on energy.

You obviously have no clue how electricity works. Current is drawn from the grid. The voltage(potential) they put at your meter makes absolutely no difference in what will be drawn by the ac/fridge or anything else in your home.

It is not a matter of "it has to go somewhere"

Encouraging (via education) or forcing (via legislation) consumers to use less electricity will increase profits for energy companies, because it means less need for upgrading infrastructure. The drop in revenue is probably more than covered by an increase in rates. Much preferable to the massive capital costs of bringing a new station and/or associated distribution infrastructure online.

They figured out it was easy to get morons to pay $12 bucks for a lightbulb by telling them it was "good for the environment". Pure profit.

What pisses me off...is that the bulbs are supposed to last for years.

It will be LED soon. You can dim those little fuckers. Shit, they will probably have little solar panels and rechargeable batteries on them too eventually. Charge in the day, shine in the night. There's my million dollar idea for the day.

The good old incandescent light bulb produces a lot of heat so without them won't we end up using more gas/oil to heat our homes?

If the reason for the change is using less electricity thus saving us money then all good but if we end up saving nothing because they jack up rates and these new bulbs don't promise what they deliver then once again the government and big business have made idiots of us.

Here in Vegas they announced on the local news that the power company got the local govt. to approve a rate increase because people aren't using as much power! :(

They run t.v. commercials here all the time from the power company encouraging people to use less. And then they raise the rates to keep your bill high anyway.

EDIT: If you noticed...Congress is about to raise the gasoline tax because...you guessed it, people aren't using as much gas in their cars and they need more money for highway infrastructure. Fucking unreal.

I was touring a substation recently and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was lit with old school incandescent globes. Wouldn't be surprised if most of them were years old as it usually runs unmanned.

Light bulbs used to last forever. Then the companies that made them realized that there was no money in that. (just like every other product).
So they stopped making them to last and started making them specifically to burn out after a certain amount of time.

The ban on electric bulbs is a great idea, but an extra tax on the bulbs would have been acceptable maybe.

I have replaced all of the lights in my home office with LED lights. Light bulbs are inefficient because alot of the power they use is lost to heat. Halogen lights look great but they too waste a ton of energy. Those pigtail florescent lights were a TERRIBLE idea because the light they produced had bad color, weren't bright enough, and contained mercury. The LED lights I have now are BRIGHT and WHITE and stay nice and cool. Best of all, they use about a tenth of the energy that bulbs use. They used to be rather expensive at about $25 a bulb but the home depot near me now sell them at about $14. In a year or so they might be under $5 hopefully.

More reason... The flicker rate makes you docile.

Strange that you bring that up... the LED lights over my desk don't seem to flicker at all, but I know exactly what you are talking about. LED lights on cars and old calculators, flicker, the way old CRT monitors used to flicker, but these LED's don't. Maybe since there are 5 LED's in each "bulb", each light is slightly out of phase with the other, so the flicker is masked? I'm just guessing....

You reminded me of something: One of my first jobs was selling computers in a computer store. The store had a showroom with about 10 monitors and 10 computers running. I bet my boss ten bucks that from a distance, I could instantly which monitor was the best one, and which was the worst one, with a cookie.

Of course he called bullshit and one day at lunch he challenged me. He told me he re arranged all the monitors and to come into the show room and prove my point.

So I grabbed an oreo cookie or 2, and stood so I could see all of the monitors all at a single glance, and then start eating the cookies. It also helped that they were in the fridge and were cold and harder than usual.

The CRUNCH the cookie made when I bit into it made my head and/or eyes jiggle slightly. As this happened, the images of all of the monitors would bounce slightly, creating a weird blurry "strobe" illusion. The monitor that had the most "strobes" during the "crunch" was the best one because it had the highest refresh rate. The one with the fewest "strobes" was the cheaper monitor because its refresh rate was lower. I won the $10.

The Buffet deal is definitely being talked about. But no, that's not what I was talking about at all. This was a recent local news story and they said that the power company was saying that people were using less energy so they needed to raise the rates to keep making the same amount of money! Claudia and I were watching the local news that day while we were eating our lunch and both stopped and talked about how we couldn't believe the nerve of them. First they tell us to conserve...then they punish us for it. :(

As for the gas tax one...I wasn't talking about a blog/opinion post in the Washington Post.
I heard exactly what I said in my post on the radio from CBS news (they run CBS radio news breaks on the hour on the local radio station here).
The CBS reporter said that because newer cars were getting better gas mileage AND people were driving less (probably because of high gas prices)...Congress was considering raising the national tax on gasoline.

My feeling on that is that it will raise the price of everything...all food and pretty much everything you buy...because of higher cost to get it to you. In my mind it's a tax on the poor who drive cars.

People who don't drive don't care. People who make enough money that paying 70 dollars for a tank of gas doesn't bother them won't care.
But people struggling to get by who have to drive to work? It's gonna hit them hard. Gas is already too high.

It always seems that the people who don't have much money are the ones who get nailed the hardest by these kinds of taxes. :(

EDIT: Just looked up how much tax per gallon I'm paying here in Nevada. With state, local, and Federal taxes it comes up to 51 cents per gallon!!! That sucks. :(

Go with the LEDs. They are using like 10x less energy and they are lasting for 15 years.

12 bucks? shop around. I get mine for 50 cents each at meijer. They last for 3 years at least. I had to go back there to get more for the rest of my place they work so well. (ps no deals like that in canada, had to grab those in michigan)

Bah - don't cry. Your gas is much cheaper than ours. We pay $5.59 per gallon of gas, and about 50% of this is tax, with 22% of that just in Quebec Taxes alone in the city where public transit is available. The rest of the taxes are GST & PST and others...

Buy them at Home Depot. That's where I bought mine. I had to return one about 7 months later and had no problem exchanging it.

LED lights for actual home lighting used to be kind of sucky but now they are great. I'm currently shopping for a new house and when the build starts I will be asking the contractor to install only LED lighting where possible.

we have CFL light bulbs in our living room and they are working for ~4-5 years now without any problem.. and they were from a cheap manufacturer too..

Sucks how much tax you guys are paying in gas.

Here in the U.S. it kinda hurts even more because our govt's refuse to do any kind of real public transit.

For instance, here in Vegas....they have a monorail. Only it doesn't really go anywhere and nobody uses it.
They built it to go between the old Sahara (now the SLS) and The Flamingo. It stops at the LVH (off strip) also. To get on it you have to walk several blocks in the 110 degree heat and it shuts down each evening (in a 24 hour town).

The taxi drivers lobbied against it running from the airport to the strip and also against it being run to any more places on the strip. So it's almost useless. :(

And in the United States itself...we don't have any high speed trains. So it's either drive your car 2000 miles or fly. I believe the airline lobbies here make damn sure that we will never have trains to get us around the country.

I'm like most people...IF I could get around without have to drive...I damn sure would. Yeah, I like having my car when I take my family to dinner. But I don't want to have to drive for hours and hours to go somewhere.

My house is about 5,000 sq. feet and 2 story. I don't even KNOW how many bulbs it has! lol

Just the kitchen has 9. And the first thing I did when I moved here was put in all flourescent bulbs.

Spent a few hundred bucks over a month or so doing it by room.

I'm pretty sure I've had to replace almost half of them every couple of years. The ones in the kitchen I've replaced ALL of them at least 3 times. :(

Sucks too. Because we set our AC on 85 degrees F
And use all flourescent bulbs. Turn off the lights and anything running when we leave a room.

And the goddamn electric bill this month was $576 !!!

I have all new electric appliances (dishwasher, refrigerator, clothes washer) that are all the highest rated for saving electricity. I even replaced my pool pump with one that has multiple speeds to save electricity.

So we live uncomfortably in our nice big ass mansion and STILL can't get the electric bill down. Fucking sucks.

On Maui I used to have $1500 electric bills. Much of that was due to the pool, hot tub, pond, TVs, A/C... etc... but I have figured out the secret. Place I'm in now has great natural lighting from the sides and the top (even in the kitchen), so we almost never run lights at all, except in the bathroom of course. At night, we use candlelight. We got rid of television (also a huge power sucker), there's no A/C, and all the other non-essential crap so now it's really only like, 9 computers running in here and the fridge. Power bill has dropped to less than $25 per month.

It's the lights, A/C and the TV that mostly inflate a power bill.
