Got a fun scammer phone call today

For the last few months I have been getting calls about once a week from an 800 number. They always call early in the morning when I'm asleep and have my phone ringer turned off. They never leave a message and when I call back I get a recording telling me this cell number is no longer in service.

I looked the number up online. It is 1-800-707-4064. All the sites say it is a scammer trying to scare you into paying them.

So I am sitting here working and my phone rings. It is that number. I pick it up and I get a guy with a very heavy Indian accent telling me he is a federal investigator. He sounds like he is calling from a crowded phone room. He tells me that the FBI, Federal Marshals and State Attorney General are about to issue a warrant for my arrest for things like bank fraud, misappropriation of funds and a few other charges. He makes it sound like I am a straight up gangster.

I inform him that I haven't done any of these things and he gets very excited and starts telling me to let him finish, I am in big trouble and he can help me. Finally, I tell him that anyone who understands how the law works would know that if they were about to arrest me they would just do it, not hire a call center in India to pre-warn me about it. I tell him he should be ashamed for scamming people.

As I hang up in a very high pitched voice he yells,"Prepare to be arrested if you don't listen to me now!"

Their scam is that they scare you into thinking you are in trouble with the law then for a "fee" they can help all those problems go away.

It was an entertaining call.

That's a new one. I'll keep my ears open.

I have had 2 - 3 calls a DAY for the last 3 weeks form those fucking idiots from "Microsoft Windows Repair" about my computer bullshit scam.
I take a minute or two with each one to fuck with those asshats, too.

Rob 07-11-2014 06:19 PM

I received a call from Microsoft (very heavy Indian accent as well) telling me that I had a virus on my computer, and they were calling to notify and assist in removal. He said he just needed to access my machine to remove the malicious code. I told him bullshit, Microsoft doesn't call anyone. Ever. And told him to fuck off and let me finish eating my steak in peace.

Thanks to this thread I get to see all the 'fun' I've been missing.

Because... for many years now I simply do not answer calls from any unknown number. I have call display and an answering service, why trouble myself by picking up the phone? If it's legit and important enough they'll leave a message. If it's some bullshit scam or telemarketer they of course almost never leave a message.

Btw the evil part of me wants me to say that I'm having trouble feeling sorry for all the people stupid enough to fall for a scam like that.

The other thing it wants me to say is that I'm still working on that device that allows you to send a shock through the phone line to the person, jerk, asshole, idiot, or scam artist on the other end.

I think that shock device would make you a very wealthy individual.

It sure would. And it doesn't have to be an electric shock. It can be a sound frequency that causes the damage - this would be the ideal time to find the infamous "Brown Note".

I just got a visual of an entire call center sitting at their desks talking on headsets and wearing diapers.

I operate the same way...I don't answer the phone...and only respond to a call if they leave a message...but sometimes I decide to have some fun with a telemarketer and will take the call. Right away I will over ride what they are saying and give them a spiel about a car I have for sale. Every time they begin to speak I will over ride what they are saying with something additional about the car. I continue this until they hang up on me.

baddog 07-11-2014 11:19 PM

I can't believe you guys aren't taking advantage of the opportunity; I have had these guys going for 30+ minutes at a time with everything from trying to get my computer turned on to making them spell out URLs multiple times to "I get a 404". They will tie up 2-3 people on a call to me.

And heaven forbid you catch me while I am masturbating . . . I wonder what goodgirl did with that one recording. hmmm

Yes but that would probably raise human right bullshit and similar things. For example, some guy in UK converted his phone number to be premium number, meaning if you call him you need to pay xxx c per minute, wondering is still allowed to do that or they canceled it.

I have no idea. I have had the number for a while so it likely ended up on some list somewhere.

LOL, I got that same call a while back. Holy fuck it was entertaining. The guy first identified himself as from "windows computers" lol. I burst out laughing. So many times with his pitch I just burst out laughing at him and I made fun of him too, it was so hilarious.

I don't know if you guys get these calls from "air duct cleaning" giving 50% off. They've been calling me for 3 years now, here and there, and I always have a blast with those guys.

On a site note, it's illegal to prank call and then publish your calls.. but.. anyone know if it's legal to record and publish incomming calls? Like a reverse prank call, especially if it's a scam piece of shit. hehe that would be fun.

It depends on the state you live in. Some require that both parties be aware that it is recorded, others only one party must be aware.

Oh, believe me, I've had my 'fun' with them in the past. My favorite was the Andy Rooney method... Interrupting them and saying "excuse me for one second, I have something on the stove" or something to that effect, then just lay the phone down and go back to whatever it was you were doing. A few minutes later they'll get the hint and you can hang up your phone. It worked brilliantly for me when Capital One was calling me up to 5 times per day about 6 or 7 years back.

(And before anyone starts running to snopes.com, Andy Rooney himself may not have said this exactly but that's irrelevant, it's written in stone as "the Andy Rooney Method" now)
