even the food network is ruined these days with stupid game/reality shows and non stop 'how much bacon can i shove in my face' diner shows.

used to have more cooking shows where someone could actually learn something, but no nobody wants to do that..

Discovery Channel shows some of the most stupid stuff, but at least they seem to be showing more and more science shows again. I was getting worried for a while.

Manfap 07-17-2014 12:47 PM

yep, 5 years ago, you could always turn on any of them and learn something 24 hours a day.. now just shite!

I've had to start watching Bargain Hunt on BBC.
Spanish telly is so bad.

the network produced a couple hits like American Chopper, dirty jobs & became hopelessly addicted to reality TV profits. Now they just spam the public with work like toddlers & tiaras, which itself spawns more junk like honey boo boo. But it works. they paid honey boo boo like 2K per week & it brought in millions of viewers/dollars.

the public gets what it wants...:)

Amputate Your Head 07-17-2014 05:24 PM

You still watch television?

Broadcasters make billions in profits while using the public airwaves for free. In return, they are supposed to provide programming that fulfills community needs. Instead, lobbyists have successfully fought to make it easier for broadcast companies to gobble up even more free airspace while doing less to serve the public.

Massive corporations dominate the U.S. media landscape. Through a history of mergers and acquisitions, these companies have concentrated their control over what we see, hear and read. In many cases, these companies control everything from initial production to final distribution.

The news is fake.

Relentless 07-17-2014 06:12 PM

Now you can what happens when people think they can save money by not paying good writers. Everyone knows reality television is crap... But it costs nothing to produce because you don't need good writers. I really do think reality television may be the canary in the coal mine. As content quality degrades, people start to see that free isn't always better.

The Porn Nerd 07-17-2014 06:45 PM

Ancient Aliens ROCKS - I wish there was an entire channel devoted to it.

carpocratian 07-17-2014 08:14 PM

Even when the "science" channels features shows purporting to be actual "science," they tend to get things wrong. Similarly, most shows about archaeology and anthropology are way off base (I spent years in graduate school for anthropology and roomed with archaeologists).

PR_Glen 07-18-2014 09:04 AM

As bad as that is on its own, it's not just unnecessary consumer junk you are being conditioned to buy. You are also being sold ideology and a world view. It's called societal shaping, and it's very effective.

So I have to ask, why on Earth would you pay (and pay greatly, tv subscriptions are not exactly cheap now days), to have a signal piped into your home that feeds you with lies, propaganda, and a false view of the world 24/7?

You think it's "cute"? I think it's evil.

Tom_PM 07-18-2014 10:18 AM

Who to believe, those who claim it's news or those who claim all news is a conspiracy. It's either one crazy sect or the other, haha.

Dead 07-18-2014 03:53 PM

Netflix, problem solved! I have not watched broadcast tv in a long long time, and do not plan too.
All the information I need is at my fingertips, and I get to base my own opinion from every angle I choose to search, not what is being displayed.
Why would anyone even need cable tv? I am still searching for the end of the internet and it keeps getting deeper and deeper.........lots of information and all the history one could want.

MK Ultra 07-18-2014 04:46 PM

I miss Wings :(

(narrated by Peter Ustinov!)

now I only tune in when I want to see the latest episode of Most Deadliest Ice Road Naked Outlaw Alien Pawn Stars.
