MSNBC gets punk'd live on the air

Couldn't have happened to a more worthy propaganda outlet. :1orglaugh

Using a tragedy like that as bait for a prank is cool when you have the maturity of a 12-year-old.

Congratulations.

Instead of pontificating your great maturity and lambasting the prankster, try for a moment to pry your eyelids back to see through the illusion of these outlets and the mirage they project into the minds of millions. This goes to illustrate the charade you so willingly accept as fact on a daily basis, and their negligence in putting a guy on the air as an "actual witness".

What if he had played this straight and said he saw a missile from his window seat?
That would be propagated all over the world right now as truth because... "I saw it on the news!"

Pretty shocking. What steps do news outlets normally take to verify the legitimacy of callers?

Embarrassing for MSNBC, but not nearly as embarrassing as that caller is to his friends and family.

Captain Janks, the nickname of the main prank caller who does this has been providing a great service to mankind exposing these news outlets for the slipshod operations that they are for about 25 years now.

I'm torn between feeling sorry for him, and wanting to see his face mashed into a jelly with a shovel.

While I agree that the prank was childish and not at all inteligent, I don't see any difference with the reverence the prankster used vs MSNBC. Those media outlets reap the benefit of tragedy in the form of ratings all the time. If they had any sort of reverence for the situation, they would have vetted their source properly. But in this day and age, the expectation that any such outlet would properly vet its source, is cast aside at the expense of getting the story out first.
