I believe it.

Smart phones are supposed to improve lives. And they can greatly. But for most people, it's hindering their life.

I almost refuse to go to a restaurant now because it takes so long. Take out only.

That, and what disgusts me is families sitting in restaurants both waiting for their food to arrive and even while they are eating. I always see an entire family with their faces buried in the phones, ignoring the family members around them. Is it too much to have a conversation with each other for 15 fucking minutes out of the day?

My wife and I got invited over to some friends for dinner a couple of weeks ago. There were a few other couples there. One of the couples, both guy and girl, kept looking at and texting on their phones throughout dinner.

So fucking rude I wanted to throat punch them both. If someone invites you over, gives you wine and cocktails and then goes to the trouble of making a nice dinner for you. The least you can do is give them your undivided attention while there.

Went on a road trip short vacation with a buddy who use to frown on all of us when we where checking our phones. Needless to say when I told him he became the type of person he hated... well the reaction didn't go to well.

I saw that Jman, ant totally agree with the conclusion. People are fucking rude !

Thank god when we have our yearly dinners in Montreal we don't invite rude people :winkwink::upsidedow

Line the walls with lead and don't offer wifi.

Jman 07-21-2014 12:59 PM

I'm seriously thinking of opening a "NoCell Cafe" I think people would like it... Especially tree hugging hypsters ;)

My gf can barely watch a movie for 10mins without checking her facebook on her phone. Drives me crazy.

I swore i wouldn't pay for another movie when she did it with the last one i ordered. People just can't keep their attention on one thing these days. Too busy wondering what everyone else is doing at all times.

Ridiculous times to be honest...

It SOUNDS possible maybe, but I would argue that there's just not enough data to draw a real conclusion. There could be other factors causing people to give bad reviews.

I have a rule with my kid. When eating the phone stays in his bedroom.
That fucking Whatsapp noise every 2 minutes drives me mad.

Mark, if in 2004 it took on average 8 minutes for customers to be ready to place orders and in 2014 around 21, what other factors do you need.

And I am sure the people complaining are the non digital generation who probably find it pathetic to see everyone at dinner table all hooked on their screens.

xpimp 07-22-2014 09:35 AM

not so long time ago, i decided to get a smartphone, like the rest of the crowd who looked strange at me when using an old nokia brick phone.

after having the smartphone for 6 months, i saw how slowly i was transforming like everybody else, checking and verifying different things o the net(fb was the last thing to check)

then i decided to sell it, bought again a new slick brick nokia(i charge the phone once per week or more) and with the rest of the money, spent a one week vacation without no internet

Jasminevsmedia 07-22-2014 09:51 AM

I agree! I worked in this industry and its a pain in the ass when your busy and trying to take an order, but someone wants to post there selfie first.

Pornopat 07-22-2014 11:45 AM

If in 2004 it took you 1h and 5 minutes from start to finish you did not go to a real restaurant. :2 cents:

If someone went through the trouble to create that graphic it must be true; they would not allow it on the Internet if it wasn't

Jman 07-22-2014 12:52 PM

Let me add that I have shown this to several friends who are restaurant owners and they all agreed with this research and actually some of them are planning on putting in policies about it. Who better to give you the time of the day than someone in the actual biz.

3 requests to be seated elsewhere in 2004 VS 18 requests in 2014?
Does not sound like could be possible under the same circumstances.

Also - 5 minutes on average for wifi connection? I do not buy it as mostly it would take 10 seconds to say pass or something. Waiters are not technicians and if it takes 5 minutes on average (meaning many times much more) it is not restaurant's wifi issue..

MiamiBoyz 07-22-2014 01:43 PM

You know what is 100 worse than cell phones...children.

I would rather leave a restaurant that have to endure those little fucks. Give me a restaurant full of cell phone and not fucking kids and I am very happy to eat there (and wait as long as it takes).

I agree. My smart phone has caused major disruption in my life. I feel like I can't disconnect from business. With a 24/7 365 business, with staff in several countries, customers all over the globe, it's like worrying about a retarded child. But I'd be lost without it, though. It sucks.

I can believe it. When I was a bartender I prided myself on prompt courteous service. However, if I went to greet a patron and got the 'gimme a minute' gesture while they were on their phone, they went to the bottom of the list. Occasionally someone would be upset when I got back to them 5 minutes later, but when you're working for tips, slowing down service to a hundred people for the sake of one just doesn't make any sense.

Imortyl Pussycat 07-23-2014 12:22 PM

ugh, i can't stand it when people are at dinner using their phones. the only time you will see me checking my phone at dinner with any of you is if we are expecting another guest and they need help finding the place or letting us know they are enroute and placing their drink order to be ready upon arrival.

People, generally speaking of course, were always self-involved, ignorant, rude and blissfully unaware. The smart phone is just the lastest UV light that exposes the mess bolder and brighter than anything ever before in history has. Long ago the comic book was the thing. "Would you put away those damn comics and come to dinner!!"

Then it was video games.
Then computers. "Fuck, how long are you going to sit at that damned computer?!"
Then computer games.
Then x-box.

And all the while all that was going on, the cell phone was making it's move towards turning nearly all of society into distracted zombies who give the person in front of them less than a 1/4 of their attention span.

My favorite is people who carry on their phone conversation right through the checkout line at the supermarket. They're a special kind of brilliant.

Marcus 07-23-2014 12:58 PM

Cell phones have been ruining going to the movie theater for me too. In almost all of the recent movies someone had their cell phone and was texting during the movie. And there was a row of teens who all 6 of them had their cells out taking flash pictures of themselves and Snap Chatting.
People suck, I dont go to the movies unless its something I want to see right away, I just rent online now

I stopped going to the "depanneur" corner store next to my place cause the bitch at cash is talking on her cell while checking out what people buy.
