why he did this now?

J. Falcon 07-22-2014 03:08 PM

I always thought the original book version of The Shining was horrible. One of the few cases where the movie is better than the book (The Godfather would be another). Stephen King is really a pretty shitty writer.

Although I prefer Dean Koontz to King - I wouldn't label King a "shitty writer". Perhaps inconsistent with the quality at times...but he's cranked out a few good ones over the years.

Halfway through it.

Not his best, which is 11/22/63 ......

..... but not his worst either, which is Gerald's Game.

wasn't satisfied with 11/22/63 or expected too much from King + time portal combo

Magnetron 07-22-2014 04:23 PM

Although, I couldn't even get beyond page 75 of Lisey's Story or Duma Key.

The Shining ranks near the top of my list,

Aren't many that I haven't read.

yeah, he's so shitty that he sold 350 million books and is in the all time Top 20 of all fiction writers

let's agree that YOU don't like him but your expertise in general doesn't count much :winkwink:

You're right, shitty writer is an exaggeration. I find that his books start out interesting, they continue to be good to almost halfway through the story, then really bomb at the end. I've read many, many of his books (I used to enjoy them when I was younger), I even read his On Writing. My favorite has always been Dolores Claiborne. Funny that it's one of his few non horror stories.

I did read both. Stephen King is a genius compared to Mario Puzzo.

So? Dan Brown sells record breaking numbers and his books are truly horrible. When it comes to sales of books - even more than moves - numbers mean absolutely nothing. People are especially lazy when it comes to choosing what to read.

Im a big fan of the Dark Tower series. Read them one after the other over a 3 month period

The Porn Nerd 07-22-2014 07:38 PM

The problem with a Stephen King or an Anne Rice or a John Grisham or any "mega" writer is they crank out volume after volume, page after page, this non-stop stream of verbiage that the writing almost HAS to be 'slick' just so you can get through all those words. If you get into one of these writers be prepared to read like 50+ novels. Wasn't Tommyknockers or The Stand like 1000+ pages?

No way jose.

Not to mention that all of their stories are basically the same.

Can't agree on that. He is a great character writer and his books are awesome. As about the "Shining" movie, I don't even remember what it was about if you ask me. Jack Nicholson was starring there, right? Nothing else I could remember about it.

BTW, did you read "The Dark Tower"?

Lol could not agree more, Gerald's Game was complete shit!

When people continue to read 500 to 1000 page books by an author, it usually is a sign that the author is an above average writer and that those readers aren't lazy.

True, King follows an often predictable formula ..... says so himself, write about what you are familiar with. That's why most of his characters are authors or teachers.

Despite this, he still makes sales and does so based on his name alone without any Fifty Shades Of Grey hype or intense marketing.

J. Falcon 07-23-2014 06:25 AM

I should add that some of favorite King stories are the ones he wrote earlier as Richard Bachman. I really liked The Running Man, The Long Walk, Roadwork and the story that started all the school shootings across the US: Rage. That collection if excellent.

PR_Glen 07-23-2014 06:40 AM

most writers aren't truly appreciated until they are long gone, king will be remembered as exactly this..

people have a problem with popular, they think they lose their black sheep card if they like anything that most others do so they draw up reasons to dislike them.

Choopa_Pardo 07-23-2014 07:29 AM

I have read a lot of King. I would not call him a great writer. He's a fairly average writer. Incredible storyteller, though.

I enjoyed Doctor Sleep a lot. Started 11/22/63 last night!

RandazzoXXX 07-23-2014 12:13 PM

Stephen King is a mediocre writer. He's written a couple good books, a handful of terrible ones, and the rest are mostly average. He got lucky early on when one of his books got adapted into a very popular movie and his popularity snowballed from there. Basically he was in the right place at the right time.

Popularity doesn't equal good. Why is it that crappy movies made by hacks (Like Michael Bay, for instance) that make a lot of money are bashed but books written by hacks are assumed to be amazing just because the author is popular?

Well, there you have it.

Those were released under the name Richard Bachman beginning with Rage in 1977 because he wanted to see if his writing would sell without the name Stephen King attached to it.

And it did.

By that time The Shining was being published, Salem's Lot was already on the shelf, he was working on The Stand and Carrie was just released as a film.

Your right.

It most certainly had nothing to do with having bestselling books and numerous short stories published under two different names.

SilentKnight 07-23-2014 03:26 PM

A lot of people don't know it - but Stephen King got his earliest start in porn mags. Some of his early short stories were published in adult magazines.

I remember reading The Raft in a Gallery mag sometime around 1980.

He even tried to write porn but couldn't get into it.
