Prince William, the heir to the throne of England has spent the past 6 months training to become an ambulance driver, albeit in a helicopter. What's the point of a royal family unless they act 'royal'? What's next for him, a broiler cook at Outback Steakhouse?

It's actually quite 'royal' to keep in touch with the common reality out there, as in out there in their country and across the UK. Royals of Britain have been doing it for centuries. Military service. Public service. Philanthropic pursuits, etc.

To do otherwise, as in being all 'detached and snooty', if history is any indicator, often leads to resentment amonst the commonfolk, revolt, and in the case of one such "Let them eat cake" utterer... a good and proper beheading. The Royal Family's purpose is a photo op, the people love it, the royals really don't need to work as bus drivers and nurses' aids so the peasants feel they're human. After a day driving the helicopter ambulance Wills ain't going home to a 200K house with a mortgage. Bit of a charade.

The Royal Family of England are really GERMAN by heritage. About 100 years ago their changed their name to the made-up moniker 'Windsor' during WWI. I have always wondered about this. The US Presidents are no different. Hosting basketball, beer and pizza nights in the white house, mending fences on the farm, playing sax on Arsenio Hall etc. I want my presidents to be and act Presidential. I don't want a "regular dude". I want a man that comes off like James Bond on steroids, only wears a bad ass suit at all times and who is surrounded by legions of men dressed in black, black glasses, black cars and with black helicopters circling overhead. Everything about his presence should say "i'm the baddest motherfucker on the planet and no one has seen me smile ever". I dont want him kissing anyone's ass. I don't want him kissing foreign leaders asses. I don't want him to smile or do anything at all that i do. I want all people in the world to think "that guy's pretty fucking bad ass looking and who the hell knows what he's thinking right now because he always has that badass poker face". I want to look at him and think both "i really want to be that bad ass guy" and "too bad i could never be that fucking cool and bad ass".

Well, many of whom you listed have been incorporated into what we now know as "English" (Saxons, Britons, Angles, etc). That's NOT the same as former Hapsburg Germans ruling England and the Royals having to change their (German) surnames during WWI to the made up 'Windsors' so their "people" wouldn't revolt at having German rulers whilst at war with Germany. So yeah, not the same at all.

When I was living in Costa Rica one year Obama visited, so did the president of China. When Obama came, it was security up the ass, a bunch of closed roads and all kinds of inconvenient bullshit. When the president of China came, it was just another day in San Jose.

That makes two of us - I don't understand why you brought up Native Americans (Indians) in the first place. America is a country of immigrants. England was conquered many times and morphed into what it is today. But the whole POINT of Royalty is succession whereas presidents are elected and not related. :)

It's a very Royal thing to do, nothing normal about it. how many of us could wake up one morning and decide to fly a helicopter? How many of us have a helicopter to fly? How much red tape would we have to get through to fly one?

It's not the same as a normal job, it's a fantasy job like being an astronaut or a basketball player.

Doesn't he have to to x amount of training in each different sector? I remember years ago I read that he was doing advanced training in 5-6 different parts of national service because he will be running the country one day. His brother is an Apache helicopter pilot who also served in active combat, I'm by no means a Royal Family fan but I respect these two guys, especially Prince Harry. The kid wanted to go and serve his country and help protect his squadron, takes major balls to go to a war zone knowing you will be a priority 1 target.

I'm apolitical myself but in a country where most people expect to get handouts, it's nice to see these two actually do something when they could just have easily taken to the easier lifestyle.

What this story is missing though is the fact that Prince William is apparently donating his salary to charity.

Royals have traditionally wed cross country, that's how they have made alliances with another countries. It's really not a big deal. These Germans didn't invade England to take the crown, one of them married English queen and the descendents got the father's family name.
