that and those in California need to remember we are in a severe drought. I don't understand this whole thing, why not just donate to the charity?

Yup i spoke about this the other week. Everyone my gf's Facebook has been doing it. For me, if you REALLY wanted to donate to charity, you would. You wouldn't need a gimmick to go with it.

It's no surprise celebs have jumped on the bandwagon as well. I wonder how much of their millions they have donated in the past ? Probably not much if any...

wehateporn 08-19-2014 09:38 AM

Isn't the point of dumping the bucket of water on your head so you don't have to donate? For me it seems backwards. Yes it might raise awareness, but I would rather donate to a local ALS charity with either some free time or $$.

Wickedpictures 08-19-2014 10:25 AM

gotta hurt!

I don't get it either. Wanting to donate your time and/or money to a cause makes you feel good about yourself. The ice-bucket challenge seems more about letting everyone else know what a good person you are, than actually wanting to contribute to the cause.

It makes me think that this was all concocted by Bono's Charity "Awareness" organization.

Roald 08-19-2014 10:37 AM

lol is it wrong that I laughed out loud?

Agreed. :thumbsup

One of my friends - who used to work in the industry here - posted his video today and it was so lame. He put the ice in in the water and then quickly poured it over his head.... So lame. You should put the ice in, let it sit there for a few minutes first...

I think some people have been donating either way. But yeah, most are probably just getting 30secs of fame and not donating anything.

Pointless...

baddog 08-19-2014 12:14 PM

yeah, I am sure those couple of gallons are really going to make or break California's drought.
For those that don't get it; it is called branding and it works - $15 million raised so far - http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/v...d-15-6-n183016

Want some fails?

You are aware flushing a toilet uses almost as much water right?

aka123 08-19-2014 12:29 PM

Ice bucket challenge? Sounds as stupid as those "pie at the face" jokes.

Also so lame, look that my avatar. Ice bucket, yeah right.

Great branding, what is the brand they are branding because I honestly could not tell you.

Plutocracy 08-19-2014 12:34 PM

Penny24Seven 08-19-2014 12:37 PM

yeah how about the over 15 Million that have raised so far this year compared to 1.7 million last year. Sounds real lame now? LOL and yeah it does but for 13 million who cares

Maybe some health campaing that doesn't leave people injured or even dead, might have been better alternative.

Famemonster 08-19-2014 12:49 PM

This shit is getting more stupid. Just send $100 to a charity.

say what you will. This campaign, in a VERY short amount of time has brought in over 15 million for a good cause.

Things like this are good. A VERY, VERY small number of people donate any kind of meaningful amount to charity. If someone is making 50k a year and has a family to support, donating decent sums of cash to help others isn't an option. Fun, kookie things like this go viral and get people who otherwise wouldn't think of donating to charity to give 10 or 20 bucks.

The cleb thing, ya, who knows if they give, but when celebs dump a bucket of ice on their heads, whether the give or not (Id HOPE they do) it just makes it spread around faster, goes more viral and more regular people who are the ones donation the VAST majority of the money, end up seeing it.

branding for retards. these people are making themselves look like fools.

nico-t 08-19-2014 02:00 PM

never heard of it. Looks like another excuse for stupid attention whores to post videos and pics of themselves, which is obviously the only reason they do that shit.
"look at meeeee!"

Furious_Male 08-19-2014 02:04 PM

I agree with baddog. I am not so sure its "branding" but it is a great viral promotion. The proof is in the spike in donations.

As stupid as it may seem I am sure nobody here would complain if they had a viral campaign take off like this. I am surprised more of you aren't impressed with how strong this campaign has been from a marketing perspective.

Of course it is my fault for not delving deeper into yet another idiotic internet craze, planking, that stupid drinking game, putting bread on cats heads, now ice bucket bullshit.

Forgive me for not thinking *hey this might not be another gigantic load of shit that all the dumbest assholes who have internet access participate in*

Everything ypu mentioned above had nothing to do with raising awareness to a charity. This is and has, 15 million so far.

Lets compare donations before this bucket thing and after. Then decide. If donations raised then probably not pointless. And I am sure they are higher by 100s of percents at least. So my conclusion would be not pointless :)

Plus now everybody know about it. It may be stupid, but its not like people aren't wasting their time on stupid things anyway. Reality TV, Bieber etc.

I always hear things like 97% of the charity goes to charity organizers (eg "salaries" and stuff) and only 3% goes to the cause.
That is why I am reluctant to donate, instead I directly help somebody from time to time.

I read that its something like 21 million raised just since this was started in July and that it was over 3 million more than the raised in the whole last year..

lezinterracial 08-20-2014 08:09 AM

It does bring in the money. If you hate this, Get ready for some copies. You know they are coming.

My ideas - "ball lick challenge" for testicular cancer or "pierced nipple challenge" for breast cancer.

It has to be more creative:

"Suck a Sack" Challenge, or "Shave a Sack" Challenge

"Nip Slip" Challenge, or "Titty Twister" Challenge

Ice Brief Or Ice Bra challenge.

Where the branding experts at?

So basically, it's only lining the pockets of the organizers even more.

When i read a few months ago the salary the people who run 'Save The Children' it was sickening. And they awarded themselves a huge pay rise not so long ago. So basically, any more raised has to first pay them such ridiculous amounts...

generally it's 40-80%.. however there is lists of legit charities that have something like a 20% admin rate, what is considered 'acceptable'

if it's some form of medical research, it's almost always a scam

The Heron 08-20-2014 01:41 PM

Now it should be donate to concussion research after all these morons drop buckets on their heads!
