Should religion be classed a mental illness????
I awoke today (Sunday) to an international televised show on the TV. The 'Hour of Power' (Rev Bobby Sculler) or whatever...
He ACTUALLY claimed to have been a a Starbucks, wit his production crew, discussing his next televised sermon, when JESUS himself turned up, sat down an engaged with them! FFS! Now for what its worth, I have ZERO problems with what ANY individual chooses to believe... (Who am I to judge) but I have always thought that ORGANISED religion is one of the biggest problems on this planet today... However, when I see a man, claiming on INTERNATIONAL TV, to have MET JESUS IN PERSON.. At a fucking STARBUCKS????? So, I ask GFY... Is religion a mental illness??? . |
Poo-tianity is illness.

Religion is just for weak people that need something to believe in and pray to when their life is hard. Or for strong people that want an excuse for doing bad shit imo.
If not religion, then something else will take it's place. Money. Land. Pussy. Whatever. But believing in a divine being that has conveniently hasn't been seen anywhere near anything that can document it... well, that's just stupidity on a whole new level. |
A cosmic sense of good and evil seems useful to a peaceful society. But maybe we could get that from a different source?
|
Religions should be destroyed.
|
Yes it's a mental disorder, but so is extreme consertivism, which are usually highly religious as well as extreme progressives or what ever they are called, and even conspiracy nuts, it's all the same type of mental disorder with different triggers.
It's all,a form of Obsessive?compulsive personality disorder. |
Hey even Jebus needs a coffee!

Says the poster child for mental sanity??
|
Why can't a religious person also be mentally ill?

Of course there is zero possibility in your mind, that you own views might be deficient in some manner and that there is a lot that you do not understand about others and the world around you. You're 100% normal. "They' are 100% "crazy".... Perfectly logical. More brilliant stuff from the homeless guy. |
It will never happen -- humans need false hopes ... |
As is the case with anything used as a mental or emotional crutch whether its porn, drugs, food, whatever when it becomes an obsession or a compulsion then yes, for lack of a better term it is a mental illness.
Anything can be either good or bad, just depends on how it is used. |
there is no 'good' or 'bad'... everything is perception :)

There's nothing wrong with having beliefs. If you want to believe in XYZ and it makes you happy, fine. What is wrong are people and organizations that take advantage of other peoples beliefs and use them for money, or power, or politics, or war, or cause harm to others, etc.

even a shit sniffer (or eater etc.) is less crazy than a religious person

I did actually see Jesus myself once. He was walking in the fashion district area of downtown LA, right near 'Skid Row'...
He had sandals on, a white robe, long hair, crown of thorns etc and was carrying a large wooden cross... The only reason I didn't *quite* think it was the 'second coming' was because he was also furiously masturbating under his robe as he walked down the public street... By the state of his robe, I could tell he was about to have his 4th or 5th coming of the day... |

I also think most religious people take the human way of quantifying our creation by way of a man-written book, way too literal. |

Also, for strong people feeling weak. There are no athiest in foxholes :thumbsup |

You suffer from Puritanical which is one of the 5 sub groups of ocpd. Puritanical - Austere, self-righteous, bigoted, dogmatic, zealous, uncompromising, indignant, and judgmental; grim and prudish morality; must control and counteract own repugnant impulses and fantasies. |

Because in the context that he spoke about it, it was ridiculous! He stands up on international TV, and states that was he is about to say isn't a 'parable' or an 'analogy' but absolute truth... (Paraphrasing) Quote:
If I met you, in real life, and we knew each other n stuff, & I said to you... Last December Santa Clause came down my Chimney! I thought he was a burglar! But once I saw his red suit and beard, we had a chat for a bit, then he vanished into thin air! Would you not, as a pal, suggest I sought some kinda psychiatric help? I know I would... But this guy isn't coming up to me IRL. OH NO... He's coming up to MILLIONS of viewers all over the world, talking UTTER BULLSHIT. Don't get me wrong - There is a place for a preacher to discuss the bible or (Insert Book Of Choice Here) but not to just spew BS without sounding like a complete DICK! |
Religion = YES (mental illness)
Spirituality = NO |

Self-righteous, delusion I guess can be exchanged for fantasy, dogmatic, judgmental and uncompromising.. All in just two short sentences. Please go to the doctor and get some pills as mental illness left untreated can be dangerous for yourself and those around you. |

One could also make the obverse point that those in this area of industry are involved in it due to the very absence of religion in their lives. They then try to justify the absence by bringing to the surface the dimwittedness that forced them into the industry in the first place.... It's like asking a real estate agent not to sell you a property. Barrel of laughs :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh |
it's all fine for people to believe in something, but religion is NOT needed. We would be perfectly fine without their mind control bullshit. Religion does nothing but cause people to hate each other and causes more problems then anything.
|
I'm sure organized religion could definitely qualify as a mental illness using any sort of psychiatric disorder qualification handbook.
The palette of life threatening delusions can get very colourful there, unfortunately also very dangerous and addictive to general public. |

Just like people buy apple computers even though you can get a better PC for half the price. Its all about appealing to peoples wants. He sells a better afterlife to those who find our world awful, promises heaven if you follow his way. certainly a religious person would find your threads to be insane. judge not lest you be... :) |

Some people have a hard time with the idea that you just go to sleep for ever when you die. It's been used ever since the beginning of any authority structure to control mankind. I love to sleep. Don't get enough of it. One day I will.:2 cents: btw: Those 2 pennies are to pay the boatman on my ride across to Hades. |
