Did you ever consider going back to the flip phone?

Have you ever considered switching back to the basic flip phone?
One that only support Calling + SMS ?
I'm considering doing this myself.
I am guessing this will become a trend over the next 12 months, main reasons are reducing stress and limiting data so you only receive whats important.

I have never had "flip phone", but if you mean some basic phone mainly used for calling, I already use like that, or actually several. I have for example phone that is for my company's use aka for me to use, and that was pretty much the cheapest one I could get from local shop. I also prefer to use regular phone as a personal phone, unless some social pressure forces me to use smart phone (like on a date).

NALEM 09-01-2014 01:23 PM

Hello Due,

Hope you and the family are doing well.

All the staff keep upgrading their smart phones, yet two years ago I did a major downgrade. I use a $12 USD Samsung good only for SMS and phone calls. No web browser, no GPS, no games. Instead of looking at the phone screen constantly, checking for emails, FB posts, etc. I am spending more face time with people (family, friends, clients).

No regrets plus I have zero security issues to worry about.

Takes a while to get used to being partially disconnected from the world, but you get used to it in a good way.

mozadek 09-01-2014 01:24 PM

Going back? Hell! I never left.

Disconnected, while walking with a phone in the pocket?

anexsia 09-01-2014 01:33 PM

I use a simple flip AT&T gophone on a $25/month plan that gives me 250 minutes + unlimited text messages per month.

Rochard 09-01-2014 01:43 PM

I see no reason to downgrade. My phone is like a computer I bring with me. When I'm eating or hanging out with my family, I am eating or hanging out with my family - not checking my FB or email. At the same time, when I am spending the day away from home I can check my email to see if someone really needs me.

Arnox 09-01-2014 01:48 PM

I think for a lot of people in the business, they're already intelligent enough to know that wasting your life on a shitty fucking phone game isn't going to do anything to further their business. There are some that need to regularly remove distractions though - I'm actually one of those people. I have an iPhone that was given to me by my sister after she upgraded hers and I've only ever used it for checking emails and talking to clients. No snapchat. No Instagram. No Candy Crush.

You're absolutely right though: phones are the bane of a lot of people's existence. It's so easy to become unproductive as fuck when you get a fancy mobile.

I still think the Motorola Razr was the best phone created.

We are doing very well thank you ! Family and friends is actually one of the main reasons I started "Disconnecting" less important data when I'm not at the computer.

I think we are turning into puppets and everywhere we go you see people pulling up the phone as soon as they sit down at a restaurant, stopping at the red light. Even if you are in a group of people if 1 phone ring the others will immediately check their phones, read facebook / emails etc.

I believe you are right. Then you can almost consider a Facebook tag similar equivalent to a drug dealer waiting outside a rehab center can't you?

Yes, and also considering going back to dot matrix printers, 56.6 modems, green screen monitors and horse and cart.

No, of course not. Why would anyone want to do that? If you are stressed about getting messages, you need to filter your comms more effectively.

seeandsee 09-01-2014 02:50 PM

I have 5" android, nokia symbian, nokia os, sony-ericson os and old samsung.

Most of time i use NOKIA SYMBIAN, long battery life, great maps and everything working no bagging

SilentKnight 09-01-2014 02:55 PM

Why stop at the flip phone?

Yes I LOVE flip phones! So Star Trek-meets-James Bond. Perfect for cocky middle-aged white men like me.

How they ever became "uncool" in the first place is beyond me.

If someone really needs you, they know how to call to you, right? Or if that's out of their capabilities, they know how to text to you, right?

Agreed.

Everyone seems to think they need to answer every phone call, text, and Facebook status update the minute they come in. I check my phone messages when I want, email when I want, text when I want, and Facebook when I want.

Smart phones are an amazing tool when you are the boss. Don't let your smart phone be your boss.

Actually here's a reason to go back to flips:

Because I am sick and tired of holding a fucking BRICK up to my head to talk. A flat fucking COMPUTER next to my HEAD. I'm sure that's healthy, being made in China with their high standards of safety.

Blah blah blah, the damn thing beeping as I'm talking (someone texting), or bleeping (notification about some bullshit) or gleeping (some app updating), my ear hitting the GPS feature so now I'm getting directions to my own bathroom. Yeah, joy.

Holy shit, can I just have a fucking PHONE again please? Not some flat rectangle brick thing? LOL

Smart phone's only benefit is mobility. It's very fucked up device for being all around computer. I have all sorts of mobile things starting from lanters and so on, but I don't use those to illuminate my house.

Nasty 09-01-2014 03:20 PM

Shit I had a Motorola bag phone, weighed 10 pounds or more but could make a call from inside a basement 100 feet underground

I had a great time with old friends this weekend.
It was real simple; none of used our cellphones.

:2 cents:

That's the exact conclusion I reached as well.
If its urgent people will reach when they need to. If they do not call / text you its most likely not as urgent as you like it to be.
Its obviously required to educate people you deal with on how they should contact you, example facebook / email / linkedin for non urgent things and call / text for urgent matters that need attention right away.

mineistaken 09-01-2014 05:21 PM

Why do you specify flip phone? Why not simple phone that does not flip?
Ps: flip phones are very cool.
Pps: I have a simple phone, that does not flip.

It's been 15-20 years since I had a flip phone. I thought its the best way to describe a simple phone in a way everyone understand :1orglaugh

I have plenty of gadgets like a waterproof Galaxy S4, iPad, laptop, streaming home media server, projector tv etc. So it's not that I do not appreciate gadgets.
I guess I realized I don't have a gadget that allows me to be available for emergency purposes only without getting the full information stream :1orglaugh

JA$ON 09-01-2014 05:36 PM

In theory it would be fun, but Im able to run our whole business, many employees in offices around the world, from my current phone. Viewing sites, signing documents etc. I would never give up the freedom that having that allows me.

Tom_PM 09-01-2014 05:40 PM

I have not purchased my first cell phone yet. Never played candy crush, angry birds or any of that stuff people get off on I guess. Instagram.. well.. I can imagine plates of your lunch wirelessly without a device if it's any consolation, haha.

I'd actually really love if I had all my smartphone capabilities with a flip phone. The portability and ergonomics of flip phones were awesome, but I don't think I can go back to not having the multitude of functions. SOMEBODY MAKE THIS!

As long as I take it easy with my phone usage. I hate when people are out and about "hanging out" when they just sit there playing fucking Candy Crush or some shit like that.

Is that really freedom? It sounds more like it's enslaving you to work regardless of the time or place you are at. I think your company is running you ;-)

I'm no different though, I did realize after being involved in a couple of startups how important off time is.

Good call Nalem, teens and other youngsters that use their smartphone on a daily basis are more stressed and nervous than those who don't. Possibly even more problems might arise later in life. Sucks but im not sold by the smartphone hype. I have always gone my own path, don't need to hear from the majority what is cool and what is not.

I actually got a flip phone walkman and im happy with the "limited" sms, regular phone calls and music, I hope it wont break soon though!
