Are the Rumors/media posts About Reddit True?

That it has been co-opted by the FEDS to spy on its members? Not so much spy as just to collect data. And IPs.

Just asking.

I think Snowden first made this claim but I could be wrong. Anyone know?

dicknipples 09-01-2014 07:04 PM

If you knew anything about Reddit you wouldn't believe that.

Captain Kawaii 09-01-2014 07:27 PM

Never said I believed anything. You did.
I know the history, the suicide...yada yada...

massguru 09-02-2014 03:53 AM

Not really mate..

trevesty 09-02-2014 09:22 AM

That's incredibly unlikely, but I can see why conspiracy theorists dorks would believe it(that is, I just expect them to make up bullshit on the fly).

Reddit is usually always the front runner on pro-privacy campaigns.

_Richard_ 09-02-2014 09:28 AM

if it is done with adult sites, i am sure it is done with reddit

Not to mention Alexis Ohanian's work. But hey, let the fuckskulls believe what they want.

:thumbsup

They're easily the most outspoken as a community and company about issues like this in the tech world(of the big boys, anyways).

It just baffles me the people behind Reddit and how outspoken and shit they are let alone the community itself, and the fact that the whole company's codebase is 100% open source, people actually could believe such things...

seeandsee 09-02-2014 12:30 PM

Lol, why would they do that like that, lulz

editeur 09-02-2014 12:39 PM

If it can be true then it's true. Because, like, if they could collect the data, why they would not do this?

If you run any type of website, you collect data.. Do you give your data to the NSA? Doubt it. So why should they?

Because they have a lot of users talking lots of different things.

Markul 09-02-2014 12:53 PM

They will simply lift it from your system and you will never be the wiser.

Just asking.

no need to cooperate with any site on it.
metadata is ready to be exploited, unless you use some strange setup, like throwing away your system/ computer every few weeks/ months, using VPN, Tor, proxies etc. etc.

encrypted content is the other thing, though...

any why on earth Reddit ?

edgeprod 09-02-2014 01:19 PM

LOL -- what ISN'T spied on nowadays?

Imagine you want to create a complete profile of any resident of your country. You have technical capabilities to do this, you have an arsenal starting from gag orders and ending with 'suicide' in prison against anyone who will refuse your orders, and you're paid wage to do this. Would you inject your bugs into a top 18 site of your country, which, unlike some other top sites, consists almost 100% of user-generated content, and people on the site consider themselves more or less anonymous? If you won't, why then?

So true, so true. :1orglaugh

I was playing around with searches and found some interesting threads with this one.

https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&...it+compromised

I remember something about an article about reddit being infiltrated sometime before or after schwartz did the non-erotic asphyx thing.

Lately reddit seems to be somewhere between anarchy and fascism. I dont get the democracy claims. For example, if the mods do not like someone commenting, for any reason they shut off that person's ability to comment. Or if they can comment, it is ghost commenting. Only that person sees it. Not very democratic imho.

I doubt sometimes that simple mods even know what is going on.

Like I said - no need to have backdoors on the site for that.
If users wont use encryption it could be easily sniffed and logged, all traffic coming in and out.
for those who use it - there is always metadata.

and all it is done daily, every second....by agencies of many countries

Why would they do that with Reddit? They give their whole database away with an easy to use FREE API... Anyone can monitor Redditors... Hell TONS of bots exist on that site that do just that... The NSA doesn't need special access...

editeur 09-02-2014 02:29 PM

Does reddit include IP in the API? I doubt it.
Yes, everything is tapped, but such traffic hubs as reddit are getting personal attention, it just can't be other way.

upd: also https. It is hard to bulk intercept ssl traffic but it is very easy to read it if you have a bug on either of endpoints.

CIVMatt 09-03-2014 07:27 AM

I think it's foolish you think they're not already doing this with or without permission from reddit.
