So - how much cash should give as a wedding gift?
My business partner is getting married today. I asked him if he was registered anywhere and he said no - we're looking for cash only.
He's a great guy, we get along well, business is booming. What do I give? There are about 300 people coming to the reception tonight. I put 1,000RM (US$322) in an envelope and then last night I added another 500rm (US$483). Too much? Is $322 too little? I've got about 8 hours to make a final decision. FYI - when we place a "friendly" wager on something - it's always 100rm (US$32) - if that's any indication. |

That's generous, would he do the same for you?

How much is 1 week or 1/2 week of your share of the profits? Maybe that. Depends on the message you wish to send forward. Maybe depends on how close you are. True friends or just biz? If he had a child with his new wife, would you be a Godparent candidate or not?

April 14, 2015, I'll be getting a $100,000 bonus based on sales levels. So there's that. His wife is very wealthy Chinese - she'll be picking Godparents. We do hit brothels together and he's gone out of his way to help me adjust to Malaysia

My partner and I normally give $500 to friends who get married and $1000 to family who get married.

I think in your situation $500-1k US. Even though no gifts, maybe you can get him a bottle of something good?

I am married to Japanese. We got $500 from people/family we never met until the day. We have since become close. |

Depends how close ya are to them and their and their friends financial status. Went to a younger kids wedding and went back and forth on it as didn't want my gift to trump everyone else's that are closer to them. Thank you card came and it said thanks for the "generous" gift so I might still have went over what the other closer guests gave. I suck at shit like this as I analyze too much. Think next time I'm just gonna send a passable tranny. :2 cents:

The general rule here is if it's someone close you give around 1-2K PLN (so $300-600), if it's someone less close then around 500PLN ($170ish).

Thanks for all the input. Just landed on Penang and on the way to the hotel. I'm gonna go with the 1,500rm = us$500. I think that's fair - I'm not in the wedding party and I'm not family - but I do make money with the guy. Plus he's been good to me.

Honestly, you guys are both white (or "Americanized), and since your bonus is gonna be $100K -- I can imagine the revenue and profits that are being pulled.
I would do $1K. Anything less seems too "peasantly". If you aren't staying on after the bonus and for the long term however, then FUCK IT, just give him $500 because your main source of income is going to stop soon anyways and the remaining recurring income is limited anyways. |
What ever you are comfortable with :thumbsup

In the Chinese culture the number 8 is the number of fortune. It's the same for allot of Asian countries so also for Malaysia. I would suggest you give either 888RM, 1080RM, 1088RM or some number with allot of 8's in it.
They will really appreciate it, certainly from someone they don't expect it. Good luck! :) |
