Teacher accidentally shoots self in leg at school

suge knights new challenge? :helpme

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A Utah elementary school teacher who was carrying a concealed firearm at school accidentally shot herself in the leg when the weapon discharged in a faculty bathroom shortly before classes started Thursday morning, officials said.

The teacher at Westbrook Elementary School, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, was severely injured when the bullet entered and exited her leg, and she was rushed to a hospital, Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said. She was in good condition and alert at the hospital by midmorning, Horsley said.

No other faculty or students witnessed the shooting, but they might have heard the gunshot or seen the teacher as she was taken out of the school to the hospital, he said. Classes were continuing as usual, and crisis counselors were available, Horsley said.

Officials were still investigating how the gun discharged. "This just appears at this point in time to be an accident," he said. He wouldn't release details about the woman or what she taught, but he noted she was carrying the weapon legally with a concealed-firearm permit.

Utah is among the few states that allow people with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns in public schools, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Teachers are not required to disclose that they are carrying a weapon, and administrators are prohibited from asking.

Educators have said they have no way of determining how many Utah teachers are armed, but gun-rights advocates have estimated that 1 percent, or about 240 teachers in the state, are licensed to carry weapons.

Under Utah law, teachers and staff without a concealed-carry permit can still bring a gun to school if an administrator approves, if they happen to live on school property, or if they work in law enforcement.

The Granite School District requires teachers who carry guns at school to keep the weapons with them at all times, including inside a bathroom stall, Horsley said. Some people are surprised to learn about Utah's law and ask why teachers are allowed to have guns, he said.

"That's frankly not a question we can answer," Horsley said. "That is a question for the state legislature." "This is exactly what we are working against," said Miriam Walkingshaw, co-founder of Utah Parents Against Gun Violence, which is opposed to guns in schools.

The risk of having any guns near children is greater than any risk teachers hope to prevent, she said. The lack of disclosure about which teachers are carrying guns is a problem, Walkingshaw said. "I feel like I should have a right to know whether my child's teacher is carrying a gun," she said.

Gun-rights advocates say teachers can act faster than law enforcement in the first few minutes of any attack at a school. The Utah Shooting Sports Council, the state's biggest gun lobby, has offered free basic gun training classes to teachers.

"We trust our kids with teachers every day," Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, told The Associated Press in March 2013. "Why do we think they'll be any danger?" Aposhian did not return messages Thursday seeking comment.

This is why I am against firearms in schools. Generally speaking, teachers are not qualified to handle firearms. And trying to go about your job on a daily basis while concealing a firearm is asking a bit much.

I would be okay with armed guards, however. If only they are trained properly and not cheap rent a cops, which would most likely be the case.

As much as I am against home schooling; if my kids school suddenly started letting teachers carry I'd pull them immediately.

Next time she should engage the safety; at least while she's wiping her ass.

As someone married to a teacher, and being around a lot of teachers -- I can honestly say I don't think any of them would be good in a firefight. Teachers are not warriors.

95% wouldn't be good in a firefight. I love it when people on GFY say "If I hear a noise down stairs I'm putting out my firearm and protecting myself". Yet not one of them gives consideration to where their spouse is, their child is, their dog is, or how intoxicated their neighbor is that night.

My kid is 14, and they have friends over for over night stays - sleep overs. I am an early riser, and at this age I do not try to stay up as late as them to supervise them. I turn on the alarm system, tell them be quiet, and go to bed.... When I hear something go bump in the middle of night I don't jump up and arm myself. If the alarm didn't go off it's a safe bet that it's my kid or my wife or my dog.

I look at all of my kid's teachers and the only one I would trust with a firearm would be the principal - he looks like he could kick ass.

Obviously the solution is more teachers...so if some get shot accidently in the schools, we can just replace them and their gun.

Next

Think back to all of the teachers you ever had. Can you imagine all of them packing heat in the classroom?

Generally speaking, neither are police officers and they have had more "accidental discharges" than school teacher have had....In schools.

"...Utah has allowed teachers to carry concealed weapons for 13 years and this is the first problem he can recall."

Now, lets see how many police in Utah have had an A.D. in the last 13 years.....

Guns don't shoot people, people shoot people. Therefore it was attempted suicide which is against the law. Might be time for a mental evaluation.

Here's an alternate comment if you didn't like that one...

Assailants shot by that teacher, 0. Innocent bystanders shot by that teacher, 1.

and here's one from another perspective...

Hand guns don't have safeties you liberal shit stains. If you knew the first thing about what you were talking about you would know that. Get your head out of Obama's ass for once and try not to prove what an idiot you are.

Take your pick! It's multiple choice Friday! :1orglaugh
