In light of the recent Ebola Virus patient in the US, time to close off all travel to/from Africa?

I think it's time we seal the borders off from and and all travel to and from Africa. What do you say?

The cotton won't pick itself. You'll run out of slaves if they can't be imported any more.

NikKay 10-01-2014 04:34 AM

That's like saying we should cut off travel to and from North America. Africa is a continent, not a country.

They know how to breed more. :2 cents:

With the virus thats coming out of there I would say that it no longer matters.

And for some reason countries keep taking people out of Africa that are already infected.

Look at it this way:

" The 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918 ? December 1920) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus.[1] It infected 500 million[2] people across the world, including remote Pacific islands and the Arctic, and killed 50 to 100 million of them?three to five percent of the world's population[3]?making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.[2][4][5][6]

Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast the 1918 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. Modern research, using virus taken from the bodies of frozen victims, has concluded that the virus kills through a cytokine storm (overreaction of the body's immune system). The strong immune reactions of young adults ravaged the body, whereas the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults resulted in fewer deaths among those groups.[7]

Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify the pandemic's geographic origin.[2] It was implicated in the outbreak of encephalitis lethargica in the 1920s.[8]

To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, Britain, France, and the United States;[9][10] but papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain (such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII), creating a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit[11]?thus the pandemic's nickname Spanish flu.[12] "

And that last paragraph is scary.

It matters because Africa is a giant continent and only a small percentage of total land mass is actually affected. That would literally be like if ebola was in Alaska and someone suggested we lock down Florida as a result. I'm not saying it's not serious, but it's not so easy to lock down an entire continent spanning 53 different countries (including the island nations). There are plenty of American citizens traveling or working throughout Africa right now. There's also a ton of trade between Africa and the U.S. to consider, some $21Bn worth.

Not that easy. You can't stop the Africans from leaving Africa via other means, like on land, and into Europe, then they can go anywhere. People are trafficked, people cross borders illegally, and so on.

Africans are POURING out of Africa currently, going all over the world, especially Europe and Asia. Once there, they can hop a plane to go anywhere else.

You must stop Africans, not just travel to/from Africa. Even then, that isn't a sure thing. But it will help. Though, it is an impossible task unless they want to build a giant wall (think Escape From New York) to keep them in the continent.

Harmon 10-01-2014 09:30 AM

Shut that shit down. We have enough of them here anyways. We don't need anymore. Leave the Americans there too.

Rochard 10-01-2014 09:33 AM

I don't see how that would help. If we shut down travel to Africa, people will just go to Europe and then on to Africa.

It's like Cuba. We cannot fly there directly, but if you really want to you can fly up to Canada and then down to Cuba.

You're my favorite.

Sort the problem, not hide the problem. Vaccines, charities, help. This is needed :2 cents:

Captain Kawaii 10-02-2014 05:48 AM

In other news the US is being hit with a new virus from South and Central American immigrants that is causing polio like symptoms in children in a dozen states or so. I'd be more worried about that.

He came here knowing he was exposed and he won't be the last. If nothing else all of those coming out of Africa should be quarantined for a period before they are allowed to mix themselves amoung the general population.

The problem is not letting them go to Africa. The problem is letting them out of Africa.

:helpme

Why on earth would you want to stop this? It's exactly what the doctor ordered to get things back in balance on this planet! I say bring it on and let the strong survive... :thumbsup
