Why is Dane Cook a famous comedian?

Flipping thru cable last night and saw Dane Cook in a packed huge sports stadium.

Now, I love comedy and I love stand up comedians, so I watched this guy for about 10 minutes to catch his act.

After 10 minutes, I didn't laugh or chuckle one time. After 15 minutes, still nothing. I became obsessed watching him because I saw thousands of people laughing and I didn't understand why?

Everything he said wasn't funny. His bits were all from the 90's or bits I've heard from old timer comedians or television sitcoms. He had set ups that went no where, and his long winded stories had no style and no delivery. He doesn't even know the definition of a punch line or how to end a story with an interesting hook. I watched this guy with my jaw open, just begging for a laugh, but after 20 minutes I just couldn't take it anymore. He was huffing and puffing, like the little engine that could... but even the little engine made it to the top of the hill. It was like a bad audition in front of thousands.

I was so depressed after watching him thinking, is there something wrong with me?

I love Richard Pryor, Louis C.K., Larry David (in Curb...) and of course toss in a little Robbin Williams or Richard Jenny, but there is a HUGE difference in their comedy VS. Dane Cook. The difference, those comedians are FUNNY and in the very least, entertaining.

Was that stadium of people where he was performing located in the mid west? I know that wasn't a west coast or east coast crowd. I saw thousands and thousands of people in that stadium laughing at Dane Cook and I couldn't figure out why? I felt like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone, where everybody had changed except me.

Please tell me I'm not alone. Please tell me those were indeed pod people and Dane Cook was their new alien Overlord and I stumbled onto their alien broadcast by mistake.

"I had never done a roast, but I really wanted to, because it's so different from standup."

Bill Burr is the best ever.

Years ago I was pondering the same thing. He isn't funny but women loved him. Still to this day I've never received a decent answer. I think I heard from my ex-gf's friend said he was attractive. I definitely don't see anything mesmerizing.

His jokes make my ears bleed. He must suck the right old and wrinkled Hollywood cock.

This is just a theory.

I read a story about how he was one of the first stand up comics to use the internet to promote themselves on a massive scale. This was back in the Myspace days and he would send out mass emails and promote himself. At one point he had one of the most popular pages on the site.

My theory is that this allowed him to bring stand up comedy to many people who would otherwise not really follow it and they liked it because, well, they didn't know any better. Not to mention, if you expose yourself to millions of people you will no doubt find some of them that like your brand of humor. It is all a numbers game and Cook figured out how to play it.

that's exactly what happened, although this show was years ago and he hasn't even released a comedy album since 2009, no less toured. He only does some part time tv show parts here and there these days. Probably burned a lot of bridges with his ego when he was a 'star'.

Add joe Rogan to that list. Seems like he just goes on stage to insult people in the audience. He should stick to taking steroids, frying his brain with pot and coming up with conspiracy theories. Hes another one that used the internet to gain popularity. I remember him leeching views off stileproject back when e/n sites were huge. Webmasters just thought it was cool because he was sort of a celebrity.

jigga 10-13-2014 07:12 AM

The thing about him being the first to really use the internet is a big reason as he became huge with the college aged crowds in the mid 2000's.

Comedy is very subjective too. I know many people love Robin Williams but I always found his act odd and not funny. Carlin and Chris Rock on the other hand always make me laugh.

His appeal is to middle aged white women who think he's attractive.

Useless for most of the rest of us.

I thought exactly the same about him when i saw him doing a bit on the tonight show. I heard his name many times but never saw him perform until then.. and literally the same thoughts went through my mind as described in the original post. Not funny at all, just boring as fuck. And the crowd laughed harder at all of the jokes in the rest of the show than in his whole lame bit, so i think we're not alone.

this must explain it, since women love flat, boring, tame and unfunny 'humor', like in the cringe worthy appalling show Friends.

Nice to know I'm not going insane.

He must be a hard worker in order to make it as a comedian with no natural comedic talent. The American dream must still be alive.

It is amazing what you can achieve if you are willing to grind and have the ability to bullshit people. Look at movie directory Uwe Boll. His movies are universally panned as terrible. On Rotten Tomatoes his highest rated move is at 25% and he has several in the single digits, yet he has directed more than 30 movies and seems to have 2-3 movies come out every year.

lock 10-14-2014 03:01 AM

He uses religion as a tool not outrageously funny but has his clean wholesome followers.

MasturbateFun 10-16-2014 10:15 AM

I hate that guy. I thought he disappeared but it seems like hes trying to make a comeback.

LAJ 10-16-2014 10:38 AM

Add Paul Rodriguez, George Lopez and Sinbad to that list.

The fact that any of those guys has a career in "comedy" is an even bigger joke than they are.

But yeah... Dane Cook is extremely shitty.

I can't tell these two guys apart. I think I like one of them.

From what I hear Dane Cook is universally disliked by fellow comedians - steals all his material, can't write his own, etc., heard one LA comic whose name I can't recall do a thirty minute riff just on how bad and disliked he is by his own peers. I didn't even know who he was at the time and it was still funny but when I finally saw a few minutes of his stand up on Hbo it all made total sense.

There have been a few pretty big name comics including Louis C.K. who have said Dane stole stuff from them. I think many comics hate him, but put up with him because he is very successful (or at least was).

WDF 10-16-2014 04:22 PM

Dane who?

Oh wait wasn't he in a movie with Jessica Simpson or maybe he was on The Simpsons.

He must have gotten his 15 minutes while I was not paying attention.
