Just as a few examples.. I wouldn't call those pics in the wired article off grid.. I'd call them dropped out of society..

So what is off grid? Looks like it is just not depending on electricity, water etc from city and having your own resources. While conspiracy types use this term as if you are "hidden" and "safe" :)
