Bye-bye Google ... Yahoo to be Firefox's default search engine

Yahoo Will Soon Become The Default Search Engine In Firefox

Quote:

Starting in December, Firefox will use Yahoo as its default search engine in the United States on mobile and desktop. As a part of this five-year deal, Yahoo will also launch a new search experience for Firefox users in the U.S., which should go live at the same time Firefox makes the switch away from Google.
Quote:

In Russia, Mozilla will use Yandex Search and in China, it will use Baidu as the default.
This is a logical strategic move considering the competition from Google Chrome.

wehateporn 11-19-2014 07:07 PM

This is the first time I've heard about this, I better go and Yahoo it!

Seth Manson 11-19-2014 08:37 PM

Oh boy, google may lose .001% of it's searches. I hope they can recover.

Guess I'm uninstalling Firefox.

SilentKnight 11-19-2014 09:12 PM

I'm liking Bing much of the time.

xxxjay 11-19-2014 09:16 PM

I liked it better when Yahoo and Google has combined the results. It was a glorious period for SEO...

Probably so although I wish someone would break the monopoly. Kinda sad how everything revolves around Google.

Use our Analytics product and give us your data for free
Oh did you get penalized? Please re-submit and when we get time we'll do another review
Here's what backlinks help and which ones harm your site please remove the 5,000 bad ones
Do you have our latest algorithm tweak mastered? Good we'll change it now.
etc...

DraX 11-19-2014 11:08 PM

What I would like to know is what sort of impact it would make for the first year in numbers and years after that. Anyway I couldn't care less about google.

I know Google have a lot of faults, however most of what you mention is necessary because of people playing the system...

A lot of what we do every day without thinking about it is trying to fool Google - If they don't play with algorithms etc we all moan because sites we don't like are too high in the SERPS.....

Goes deeper than that....

Use +1 google button to be social and we'll quietly collect as much data about your site as analytics with it.

Use Chrome and we promise we won't collect data, unless you login your google account of course, which we try hard to make you do, then we will track ALL your data, ins, outs, time on sites...

DonJon69 11-20-2014 12:48 AM

I use Yahoo as my default... Google sucks.. I don't understand why people use it.. The search results sucks and it is so boring.

Klen 11-20-2014 02:02 AM

Same thing was pulled with linux mint, they have yahoo as default as well in their firefox version. But that didn't stopped people from adding google to it as default.

Yes. At least those who hate Google Chrome spyware :2 cents:

madame 11-20-2014 03:06 AM

For those of us who are orbiting around Google, any news like that is a good one (an a nice message for them :) ) I have seen many of our sites disappear magically from the first page for one big name being repeated over and over again, occupying first 3 or 4 positions (not in the adult though, but a lot in other sectors) and other great changes from one day to another.
Bing has other type of user (unfortunately, mostly either the ones that do not know how to switch for Google or are tired of its monopoly) and in my opinion, very interesting one, especially when comes to revenue.

Yahoo uses Bing since 2010 but there's a difference in the the results shown for a given search, Yahoo hasn't completely lost power over it's result both Yahoo and Bing use different kinds of filters to sort the results that are displayed. Might not mean much for surfers but webmasters will see a difference if they are first or third.

InfoGuy 11-20-2014 04:53 AM

I noticed today when updating Adobe Flash that the optional downloads have changed from McAfee Antivirus to Google Chrome and Google Toolbar.

The problem with what you wrote is that EVERYONE plays the system.

Tubes buy massive amounts of hardlinks for SEO purposes which is against Google's webmaster guidelines. Yet they rank first.

In mainstream it is the same. Look at the Insurance industry and you'll see the same behavior.

Google likes that phrase, "game the system" because it makes it sound like people are 'cheating' somehow as if they were breaking the rules in a casino or getting welfare when they don't really qualify. If you think about it, what should the default be? Who should naturally be first?

michael.kickass 11-20-2014 05:01 AM

I think it's good news, Google has made many moves this year to harm this industry so fuck 'em, if they're joining forces to break the monopoly, I'm glad.

I'm 3 Bing points away from my free $5 Amazon Gift Card...I love how Bing gives me 1 $5 Amazon Gift Card every month just for doing random searches.

Emil 11-20-2014 06:04 AM

That is true but not totally... the reason all of the purchased links haven't hurt them that much is because their domain authority is so high (or with sites like pornhub.com) - the real reason the porn tubes went to the top of the heap is because people go there and view the content for a long time, stay on the site for a long time, and a come back.

I suspect, the switch the mozilla guys did had more to do with privacy then SERPs, because as we all know when it comes Google's core product (search)... they do it better than anyone.

:2 cents:
