Terminator 5 Coming 2015

Interesting, doesn't seem to fit in with the original Terminator story...

Terminator: Genisys - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On the verge of winning the war against Skynet, Connor sends his trusted lieutenant Kyle Reese back through time to save his mother's life and ensure his own existence. But what he finds on the other side is like nothing he ever expected. After being orphaned at age 9 by a Terminator, Sarah Connor has since been brought up by another Terminator, played by Schwarzenegger, programmed to protect her. This Terminator has then trained her to face her destiny, which she adamantly tries to reject

did you know they ripped off the Terminator from some movie that was put out in the 50's? The guy sued Cameron and won.

It wasn't a movie, it was an episode of the outer limits. I actually saw that episode, boring as fuck and the similarities were vague as hell.

The Terminator story was actually borrowed from three different short stories by prolific science fiction writer Harlan Ellison.

---

What It's Suspiciously Like:

A trio of futuristic stories by sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison. In fact, you can practically build The Terminator's narrative from the premise of each of them. In the short story "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," a super-intelligent AI becomes self-aware and decides to wipe out humanity. The few survivors live in an underground complex, the only habitable place left on Earth. Then in "Soldier," two freakishly strong super-soldiers from a post-apocalyptic world are sent back in time in a flash of lightning. One materializes in a present-day alley (just like Kyle Reese in The Terminator), where he's quickly spotted by police and has a shootout with them. But wait, there's one important thing missing: Where are the robots? Well, in "Demon With a Glass Hand," a man from the future with a robotic-looking hand is being pursued by things that are disguised to look just like men.

Like in The Terminator, their time travel only works one way: from the future to the past. Oh, and the main character, Mr. Trent, is told frequently that he's "the last hope of humanity." Finally, at the end of the episode, it's revealed that Mr. Trent is actually ... wait for it ... a robot sent back in time and disguised to look human. Also, if you take the name Mr. Trent and rearrange the letters you get ... TerMntr. Dun dun DUUUNNN.

And here's the kicker: back in 1984, James Cameron did an interview with Starlog magazine where he was asked where he got the idea for The Terminator. He was reported to have bragged that he ripped off a couple of Harlan Ellison stories.

Unfortunately for Cameron, Ellison was friends with some of the staff there, who leaked him the original draft of the interview containing the admission and took Cameron to court. They ended up settling, and to this very day, Harlan Ellison has an "acknowledgement" credit on The Terminator.

Terminator was somewhat borrowed from "Soldier", an Episode of Outer Limits. I saw it too and found it boring as hell. I thought Terminator was very removed from the original story and couldn't really be considered any kind of copyright infringement. But then again, Harlen Ellison is a weird one and somewhat of a crybaby. He wrote a book about his experiences with the City on the Edge of Forever episode of Star Trek which I read a long time ago and from what I can remember about it, he just bitched and complained the whole way through.

Great post. I wondered about that. Ellison is a genius.

Way out of trend

I liked Terminator 3. I thought it was smart and well acted, and the ending was a real surprise.

Terminator 4 on the other hand was terrible. It didn't look or sound or feel like any of the other movies. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and found the whole thing boring.

MiamiBoyz 11-30-2014 09:12 PM

I would rather eat my own shit out of a bucket with a spoon than sit through that movie.

carpocratian 12-01-2014 12:00 AM

I'm not a fan of reboots, and that's what this appears to be. I have no interest in it.

It looks like they re shot a lot of shots from Terminator 1 and 2 to make a kind of Back To the Future II thing. Awesome!

I'll be there on opening day.

Paul&John 12-05-2014 01:55 AM

the trailer looks promising

Agreed. The last one, with Cristian Bale, was terrible. Boring, dumb, and didn't "feel" like a Terminator movie either.

javbucks 12-06-2014 01:18 AM

trailers are nice as always, but not sure about the full movie
but will look anyway :)

Meh - its just a teaser and the movie won't be completed for another 6 months anyway. Wait and see.

Plus, this movie is the first of a planned Terminator Trilogy. Terminator 2 is set to come out on May 19th 2017, and Terminator 3 on June 29 2018.

This is particularly interesting because under the new copyright rules, the North American rights to The Terminator franchise will revert back to James Cameron. Terminator just isn't the same without this man behind the Camera.

leila.petre 12-21-2014 10:14 AM

can't waith to see it
