It's nice to see you get started on learning science, always best starting with the simple concepts. !

Looking forward to watching your progress!

Thanks Mark, I'm going to show this to my son.

I have no idea what you are talking about. The OP is taking an interest in science and is starting off with the basics and I gave him kudos for doing so.

as you can tell by the other comments, it's a trick that is appreciated by young boys, the concept of magnetic polarity is fundamental building block of science. the OP is obviously impressed by discovering that. good for him.

You're welcome. I think its pretty cool too.

When I was a kid I used to play with all kinds of things electronics. You name it, I had batteries, motors, electro magnets, wind-up generators, lights, solar cells, meters... including a few of those 100-in-1 electronic kits. My dad got me started in that stuff when I was 5 or something like that. It was a lot of fun. I think giving a kid a creative toy or a toy that teaches is probably one of the nest things any parent can do for their kid.

I never burned the house down or got into any trouble, except once. I took the coil off of our TV set's picture tube. I didn't disconnect it, just removed it from the picture tube. I replaced it with another coil and connected the 2 coils to the left and right channels of their home stereo. The result was a kind of dancing oscilloscope with music. ah, good times.

Nice? It's a classic use of electromagnetic induction (Faraday's law) you have learned when you were a 6th grader :2 cents:

Why? :) The Faraday's law is being used everywhere. For example, when my son was a kid, his friend has made a real railgun (yeah, the one you must seen in Doom 3) as a course work in physics. Course it was not powerful enough to kill a human, but it was absolutely functional :)

Watch the new Cosmos series if you haven't yet. They did a good episode on Faraday. The world would be a much better place if people knew as much about Faraday, Newton and Einstein as they already do about Lebron James and Beyoncé.

In countries with quality education systems (not according to the Wikipedia tables but according to the reality). Faraday's law, Newton's laws, Einstein's theory of relativity, Archimedes' principle, Pythagoras' theorem, Ohm's law... We all learned it in the school when we were kids. Isn't it? I don't understand people who can just "forget" this knowledge.

P.S. I know about Beyoncé but have no idea who Lebron James is :helpme

I watched every episode of Cosmos and loved it. Entertaining and totally interesting. Something about the way they present the ideas, facts and history just kept glued to it.

And yes I agree. We devote too much attention to celebs and not enough attention to things that really matter.

I learned some of this in elementary school, and some of it in high school. One of my favourite teachers was an electronics teacher, Mr. Mestan. He looked like a crazy scientist too, complete with the lab code and crazy gray scraggily eyebrows. Awesome. All I cared about was that class, my science class, and my computer classes. I barely passed french, history and the rest - just didn't care.

nevertheless, as I mentioned, I gave you an opportunity for both of us to fuck off, YOU chose to decline, thus, here I am letting you know I am proud of you starting to actually embrace basic science concepts. and I am hoping you progress into more advanced science videos like newton's law of gravitation.

Many people just don't understand what they learn. For example, we all know what E=mc² is. It is.. a formula. But in fact, it does explain everything in our world. For example, why the speed of the light is the fastest one. Just reverse the formula and you'll get a square root from a negative value, which is impossible in the world of real numbers (the complex ones is another story). The same formula easily explains why there is no God. Ok, to be clear: why there was no need in God to create our University. It's very straight and very easy to understand. I really don't understand why all the Word's religions just haven't died yet, because this small an simple formula explains it all. It explains the World.

LOL!!!

Dynamo. I'm no scientist, but I happen to love science. The movement through the coil is cool because it is an unexpected demonstration of electromagnetism and Electromagnetic induction as CyberSEO correctly pointed out. It is very surprising to see, at least for me, and I wanted to share it with others here. That's it, that's all.

Most people here appreciated it like I did.

You on the other hand decided to enter this thread and throw a sarcastic condescending post at me in message #2.

So what's your problem? Why are you such a crybaby? Are you still mad that I don't want to be your BFF? Now you know why, Dynamo, now you know why.

I have a guess why. People don't like to think about dying, and never did. They don't want to think that there is an actual end, so they look for something infinite, forever. So way back when, the idea of an afterlife where you lived forever was born from various peoples around the world, and that seed grew into the various religious we have today. Just a guess of course but it works for me, for now.

However, if you're a man of faith, don't despair. Pope Francis has been saying some pretty cool things lately : Pope Francis declares evolution and Big Bang theory are real and God is not 'a magician with a magic wand' - Europe - World - The Independent

Peace!

I think everyone, even the countries that you are implying are below the educational standards that you grew up with are aware and understand basic physics. However as a father i think this is a great tool for me to use to do something educational with my son.

I can say i honestly resent the implication that i am in someway dumb or uneducated because i think it is a cool idea. I actually have to ask myself ,why you need to pat yourself on the back in a thread about such a simple concept?

Should we all preface our statements with educational backgrounds to escape your judgemental attitude? I for one would like to know your education level.

If you weren't so fucking dense, you'd see I treat all gfyers differently. For instance, you won't see me treat L-pink like a dick, or baddog, or many many people. So it is your love of higher learning that made you lash out against people sharing a cool trick? High level math courses there so i am going to guess you have a degree in Mathematics. "Lash out"? No way! I've just mentioned there are 1000 and 1 of similar cool physics and chemical tricks (really cool, no sarcasm or something like that) what we all know from the school. And course I didn't want to offense the OP or anybody else. I just recalled the tricks we did outside of school when we were kids (sell-made rockets, gunpowder an so on) - those were really awesome and also very dangerous sometimes...

I'm not sure about that. I was learning high-level mathematics during only two first years in the university (the same applies to physics BTW). So I believe I have no degree at all according to the Western classification. Am I technician and the mathematics was just a related science.
