What's the longest you've worked at a job?

Aside from my own company - I'm comin' up on 10 years next July workin' for the city (as a 3rd-party contract).

Longest I've held a single job.

Apparently that entitles me 3 weeks vaca and a $200 bonus (woot...don't spend it all at once).

Oh, and a gold fuckin' '10-year' lapel pin - I'm so psyched.

wehateporn 12-06-2014 04:53 PM

In day jobs never made it over 3 years before switching, affiliate marketing is now the thing I've done for the longest :2 cents:

I miss the 80s...when you could quit a job, walk down the street and get re-hired before the afternoon coffee break.

(literally did that mid-80s, lol)

Rochard 12-06-2014 05:14 PM

Seven years, although most of that was part time. Worked at a friend's restaurant.

I also worked five years at the phone company and five years for Lightspeed.

keysync 12-06-2014 05:26 PM

3 years a couple times.
Once as a jet ski mechanic.
Once at a printing company.
Still haven't found something I actually don't hate getting up in the morning to do.
Currently on year 2 as a heavy equipment mechanic.
Thinking about trying real estate next.

L-Pink 12-06-2014 05:32 PM

Started working for myself at age 23. Have had nothing but an asshole for a boss ever since.

armysmoke 12-06-2014 05:45 PM

I did 21 years in the Army before I retired in 05. I was going to stay longer but the Army wanted to send me back to AF so I went ahead and retired. :thumbsup

In the mid 90's during the tech industry boom I was working at an electronics manufacturing company. They changed from having a day and swing shift to just having one shift (they laid a number of people off as they downsized). I was working swing shift and was moved to days. I asked if I got to keep my 10% pay difference for swing and they said no. I quit on the spot. This was at 7am. I went home and faxed my resume to about 20 different companies (I operated a variety of different machines) and by lunch time I had 5 outright offers and 3 other companies that wanted me to come in for interviews.

Those were some wild days.

aztecboi2003 12-06-2014 07:51 PM

5+ years for JaYMan Cash. That is mostly longer than any real world job that I ever did. The exception would be that I now-and-then bar tended at the same place for about 13 years. But it was very part time.

I worked at a printing company for 11 yrs. The last year I started working on porn. I haven't worked off line since then 12 years ago.. So 13 years in porn.

pornmasta 12-07-2014 04:17 PM

they couldn't afford to hire me...

seksi 12-07-2014 04:39 PM

I put in about 3 years in a few different technology roles at the same university, but there was a break in the middle for about a year during the peak of the original dotcom boom and bust... does that count?

After that experience, it's pretty hard to work for anyone with real economic constraints, though I've had a few jobs for extra cash that I could not get attached to but learned empathy for people who have to work minimum wage.

I did three months overnights in a hotel (night audit) and one month in a massive online retailer's warehouse. I am pretty sure you would lose money or require foodstamps and medicaid to keep those jobs, great only for retirees or illegals, prisoners on work release or disabled folks in homes that don't have to pay rent or their own transportation costs.

Adult affiliate stuff for me has been break even... but keeps some of those old dotcom skills sharp. :)

That reminds me of the job interview I had 10yrs ago for my current job. Before he mentioned the wage - my soon-to-be-boss asks me, "Do you have a secondary income?"

That's all I needed to know what wage to expect, lol.

Little did I know at the time...I'd be taking over his job when he passed away.

For the benefit of the younger generation who probably never saw this wall poster back in the 70s:

All of the organs of the body held a meeting to decide who would be boss.

"I should be in charge," said the brain , "Because I run all the body's systems, so without me nothing would happen."

"I should be in charge," said the blood , "Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you'd waste away."

"I should be in charge," said the stomach," Because I process food and give all of you energy."

"I should be in charge," said the legs, "because I carry the body wherever it needs to go."

"I should be in charge," said the eyes, "Because I allow the body to see where it goes."

Then the asshole applied for the job.

All the other body parts laughed so hard that the asshole got mad and shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all conceded and voted to make the asshole the boss.

All of which goes to prove - you don't have to be the brains to be boss.

Just an asshole.

I love your enthusiasm.

This 15 years is my longest job. I have worked for as long as I can remember. My previous longest job was probably 4 years.

Congratulations on your 10 years and gold fuckin lapel pin.

I never made it even two years working for others in a typical corporate job.

Average was probably 8 months.

I'd master my position, have nowhere to advance quickly enough, or would have to take too small of a step up the corporate ladder, that I'd get bored and find something else. I was done that shit by 24.

I did have 7 years as a VP of Operations with my real estate brokerage, but I didn't really answer to anyone (we'd just FYI status meetings). It never felt like a j-o-b since I ran the show and also had my own inventory on the side.
