Smasung Gear VR... thoughts? Got em?
Hey. I am in Canada and we can't get them here yet... do any of you have the Samsung Gear VR? Any good?
|
It's a joint venture between Samsung and Oculus. I would imagine the end result is somewhat similar.
|
While I do not have the consumer release, it's shipping,
I can tell you that it is as good as you will get right now. Why it is the best out there right now is because GEAR VR is the only device that can deliver less than 20ms latency in the display rates that prevent VR sickness and make it very natural viewing when looking around in the media. While google cardboard and android phone will do the job to show what VR is, cardboard and others are not a really good demo of what it can and will be by those that are making sure the product is correct before release. No cell phone except the Samsung Note 4 will give you that display rate. Will change soon enough. Next is Galaxy s5. While it is limited for what you can do in the way of games, because of the GPU of a cell phone. It is great to view any 3D media and super fantastic to view 3D media that was designed for VR (3D-360-pano-sheric imagery... ie video and photo). It will be the dominate mobile device for at least the next 6 months anyway. I expect new GPU's for VR mobile in late 2015-2016. So it will be a great gaming unit soon enough. Lots of money in mobile gaming. |
tried it in their showroom, its impressive if you havent tried one out before. Made me a little sick to be honest lol

Wear headphones and on the correct ear (left/right). You will fully understand the 3D-360-omni-spherical video & audio right away. Sumsung is going to have a cheap? camera for that next year... Called Project Beyond for now. Google it. Can't wait to hear back for your thoughts. |
I got the Samsung Gear VR, but joy oh joy, they don't work with my Canadian Note 4 (N910W8) So now I am kind of fucked until I (a) give up, or (b) figure out how to get them to work... or (c) try to find a US Note 4 here in Canada (or get it shipped up).

Got them to work and Samsung Gear VR is amazing.
|
I thought you would enjoy.
It is hard to describe to someone the feeling of presence that good VR provides. You have to see it for yourself. I am guessing you needed a firmware upgrade to get it to work ? You can always try the virtualrealporn .com site if you dare/ I think they need to improve their production techniques for VR. A person could do a better job with a set of gopro cams with a 3d kit. (it may be how they are doing it but could be much better) I have only downloaded the demos as I'm not a inet porn guy but have to keep track of the tech as it is done. Tells me where to invest. So if still around, what have you tested so far ? I may suggest some things. |

Do you have the Oculus DK2 or Rift? How does the picture quality compare? And yes, I had to hack things together.... installed DynamicKat and flashed the kernel. |
For starters... check these...
jauntvr.com/content 360heros.com panocam3d.com/video3d360.html kolor.com/360-video/kolor-eyes-android-free-360-video-player.html You might also do a search for google maps for vr cardboard (android app). They have placed street-view set-up for vr but I don't think it is in 3d, just panospheric. That will keep you busy for a week. I also post a few interesting things to vrgoggle.com Nothing special, but worth checking twice a month. No frills web just to track the traffic better than parking. Didn't want to use a wordpress engine as my host can't keep the db server up to speed. Sucks as I have lost page rank on many sites. (i think)The Gear VR has a better display than the DK2. It is probably in line with the crystal cove proto. Problem with a cell phone is no GPU power. Won't hurt video playback though. Just games. I am sure you can see that changing in the near future because of the capability and demand. I think the Consumer Rift will sport the same display as the Galaxy s6 w/700ppi 4k diamond pixel. That's a eduguess. Additional content will be coming. Many folks are in wait to see mode before investing. Others are in progress. This is not going to fade away but right after the Consumer Rift is out there, you will start to see a bunch of stuff. I would encourage you if you have the slightest want-to, to create some cool content with a pair of gopro heros and a 3d kit. There will be money to be made by those that can supplying those early adopters looking for decent content. This gear Vr for the note4 is really just a proto to start developers for mobile vr apps. Expect to see something better when they make it for the galaxy s6 (next). |
Oh...
You may want to check-out the new MILK VR Google Play App There are setting-up 360 video streaming. samsung.com/us/showcase/milk-video/ |
