There's more to it than that. White innocence, birth and purity, surrender, truth. Black is associated with death of course but is also associated with elegance. Black and white photos evoke emotion in the viewer differently than color photos do.
The use of specific color pallets or color toning in a color image also have a cool way of evoking emotion that I really wish I understood more. Color "Timing" as it is called in Hollywood is a big, high tech business, for the same reason.
