Sony Cancels 'Interview' Release After Top Theater Chains Drop Out
sony has decided to drop its planned Christmas release of 'The Interview.'
The decision comes after some of the nation's largest movie theater chains including Regal, Carmike and Cineplex are holding back or dropping 'The Interview' from screens in the aftermath of a hack that has ballooned from embarrassing disclosures for Sony Pictures executives to involve threats against theaters screening the film. "Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business," Sony said in a statement on Wednesday. "Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale -- all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public." The Regal Entertainment Group said in a statement on Wednesday that it had decided to delay showing the movie starring James Franco and Seth Rogen "due to the wavering support of the film ... by Sony Pictures, as well as the ambiguous nature of any real or perceived security threats." In its own statement, Cineplex said it "takes seriously its commitment to the freedom of artistic expression," but was holding back on showing the movie "after careful consideration of this unprecedented and complex situation." This is brilliant. Go right to DVR or whatever and I bet it is the most watched movie ever that way.

Wow thats terrible. If Kim Jung Un ordered the cyber attack on Sony, he will be dancing in the streets thinking he can control the world, and then won't hesitate to do it again. Weak.
|
I think that the whole thing is just a marketing ploy by Sony to gainer interest in the movie. It is clearly a comedy and as such holiday release doesn't even make a sense. Summer release does. I am sure that is what Sony planned all along.
|
I heard early today that the rumor is they are going straight to PPV with it.

I'm not sure if they are even going to release it on DVD.
When I heard the news report it said that they are not going to release it at all. If they release it on DVD then the company gets hacked again. If anybody carries that DVD (redbox, netflix, etc.) they get hacked. If cable or satellite tries to show it...they get hacked. It's pretty fucked up. But I'm thinking that no company is going to touch the film in any distribution method. :( |
This just makes me want to see the film even more.
I hope they show it here in South Korea. :) |

I also heard that Rogen and Franco and pretty much everybody involved in the making of the movie have had their lives threatened.
So it's a little more than just getting hacked. I'm guessing that the people at Sony want to bury this quickly before anybody gets physically hurt. :( I was really looking forward to seeing the movie too. But still...from the first time I saw the trailer and the premise (that the United States is plotting to assassinate another country's leader)...I was thinking: "I can't believe they actually are doing this movie" Could you imagine if North Korea made a comedy about their govt. plotting to assassinate Pres. Obama??? It would be a shitstorm! Still would like to see the movie though...but I guess unless you were at the L.A. premiere the other night...that ain't gonna happen. |
Intriguing film i want to see it.

The funny thing is, I probably wouldn't have bothered with the movie previously. If they put it up on Google Play for rent or sell it to Netflix now, I'm definitely watching it!
|
this all blown up media crap. the hackers initially just wanted money. it was the media made the north korea connection and then the hackers just went with it.

This is the first day of the rest of your life. And each day hacking will only get worse. The sad shit is that the Sony hacks were on a level with script kiddie. Nothing major. Nothing zero day. All published software exploits that were years old.
