Thoughts on the Surface Pro 3

Wife got me one ( Surface Pro 3) for Xmas. Got to say it actually is pretty sweet :thumbsup
Much more useful than my Ipad or Android Tab.

dready 12-29-2014 08:22 AM

Surface Pros are amazing computers. Microsoft has hit a home run with these IMO.

crockett 12-29-2014 08:45 AM

I've been toying with getting one. I'm sold on it as a laptop replacement, but not so sold on it as a tablet replacement. I have a ipad minni and recently picked up a galaxy note pro 12" and I end up using the mini more because it's just the right size, despite the note being a much better tablet.

I think I will eventually get one though as I'd love to run photoshop and use the tablet like a Wacom, supposedly Micosoft worked really close with Adobe to make it work very well for that.

atom 12-29-2014 09:31 AM

I made the switch to a surface pro 2 last year and love it. I recommend the docking station if you are going to be using it hours on end. I also use it as a tablet to stream media to my TV etc. My wife also has a surface 2.

Vendzilla 12-29-2014 10:54 AM

Recently I got a Lenova Yoga and it's pretty cool

Rochard 12-29-2014 11:12 AM

I have a Surface Pro 2 and use it daily. It's a tablet and a small laptop.

Here at home I use it after hours for surfing, Facebook, reading books (using the Kindle app), that kind of stuff. I have it stuffed with a dozen movies for plane flights. Over Christmas break I took it with me and worked on the road for five days, just like it was a laptop. It's everything crammed into a small tiny convenient package.

I used my Surface Pro 2 all of last week, including streaming movies to Chromecast and.... I pulled it out this morning to use it and it still had 50% battery power. Can't beat that.

dyna mo 12-29-2014 11:13 AM

almost got one but the single usb port was a deal breaker. went with a hp envy i7 instead. 4 usbs

USB? Welcome to 2012.

Nearly everything hooks up via bluetooth at this point. The only time I've ever used the USB on the Surface was to move some files over.

M$ has the Arc Touch mouse which works great via bluetooth:

umm, try and hookup a 3 terabyte drive to your surface pro via bluetooth then post your results here.

i could not care less about a ms mouse.

btw rochard, i simply stated that i wanted to buy and planned on buying a pro 3 but could not due to my need for USB ports, no need to start with the usb is 2012 bullshit. a pro 3 is not a panacea laptop replacement.

gofuckyourself.

Amongst many, many, many other tools. One USB would be tough. I have 4 on my iMac and they are completely full and I'm not done yet. My other desktops have between 6 and 8, I still run out at times.

MaDalton 12-29-2014 12:02 PM

i also find only 1 USB and the lack of an ethernet port unpleasant

i usually use an Apple keyboard that comes with 2 extra USB ports, so somehow it could be worked out - at least while sitting at my desk - but there are more convenient solutions

MiamiBoyz 12-29-2014 12:08 PM

How does cum wipe off the keyboard?

For me that can be a deal breaker...fuck the number of usb ports - bitch

It's a tablet though, when you use it as a tablet you don't really need loads of USB ports, if you're going to do serious work at your desk you need one of these :

but yeah another USB or at least ethernet port would have been nice...

that's a nice feature. I'm with ya re: it's a tablet. the marketing that caught my eye goes so far as to say it's a tablet that can replace your laptop. the only downside about that docking station is it looks like it requires an electrical connection to 120v.

that docking station would solve my problems - but another $199

it needs to, the docking station charges the SP3 when docked.

I really wanted it to work for me, I figured there's a reason it's won all the accolades it has, it's a slick outfit for sure.

MrBottomTooth 12-29-2014 12:56 PM

I was under the impression these weren't selling worth a shit. Im not sure why as they look much more useful than an ipad.

I guess i was still thinking of the surface 2. What a difference a year makes.

Good to see ms finally do OK on some hardware. They always seemed to have good ideas but struggled out of the gate on some devices and just ended up abandoning them.

MaDalton 12-29-2014 01:10 PM

did some research since i might buy something like this next year - this one looks like a cheaper and more practical solution

Depending what you want it for weight can be an issue and the HP Envy is significantly heavier, not twice as heavy but almost.

it's the BEATs subwoofers that add that extra weight. :winkwink:

dready 12-29-2014 02:25 PM

The docking station is a MUST. You can feed two external monitors (with MST), as well as wired ethernet, and more USB ports.

crockett 12-29-2014 02:34 PM

This is what makes me want it.. It seems like an awesome tool for artist and designers.

SmutHammer 12-29-2014 02:43 PM

Been thinking about getting one for my travel computer, It's nice that i7 processors are available but $2k is a little steep. I got the surface pro 1 when it came out. $1,300. but only really use it when traveling. and just for chat or watching vids on the plane.

Then hook up a 3 terabyte drive to it.... Being as your keyboard and mouse are bluetooth then you are all set. (Need speaker hooked up to that? Well then use bluetooth speakers too!)

Why the need for so many USB ports? On my main PC I have no idea how many USB ports I have, but they are rarely used. I use one for my mouse/keyboard and then one for my webcam, and then every now and then plug in my iPod. Using the Surface the keyboard and mouse are bluetooth, while the webcam is built in.

Don't most laptops only have two to begin with?

As for ethernet ports..... I never hook up any of my laptops or tablets using ethernet ports.

bronco67 12-29-2014 02:54 PM

I just got my Pro 3 yesterday, and while I didn't like it at first, it's growing on me. I was kind of bummed there's no Optimum cable app for Surface so I can watch TV in any room.

I got the I5 model and two displays. The major reason was the stylus, it saves me hours each day when drafting new server/application design and transitions with customers. Its the only thing I bring to customer-visits now.

that + onenote 2013 + sharepoint increases my productivity 100%

Mine came with the dock and xtra power suply.

I'm happy with my Lenova, it's an IBM company and built very well with a lot of extra software. And it has 2 USB ports, HDMI and card reader

This was almost a deal breaker for me as well since I have around 20 TB's of external data on various drives laying around. I knew most of my work would be done in my office so to get around this I got a monitor that expands the USB ports when plugged into the docking station. Now I have 3, usb 3's for it.

Not sure what super battery Rochard has but I do not get a weeks worth of use out of mine on the road. About 8-10 hours of depending on what I'm doing.

no, Lenovo is not an IBM company. Lenovo used to manufactor the IBM endpoints, but ended up buying it years ago. They just bought the xseries server-series of IBM as well, and is one of the major investors in EMC.

But they are great PC's. I visited their design and testcenter in China two years ago, and they really work hard, to make sure their product is solid.
