According to experts Bear Spray is more effective.

Bear spray is a good deterrent to have. Last season we rescued a bear cub caught in a coyote trap. Mom's head was up husking her breath but didn't charge. The shaken up cub reunited itself with it's mother. Killing mama bear with cubs is a no no.
