should I use a domain or should I just use tumblr

I'm finally starting to get off my ass and doing some work. I'm selecting some photos for an online portfolio and I'm not sure if I should renew an domain or just go with something like tumblr.

Or is there a better suggestion?

Domain is always best, you have full control and no risk of getting banned, I spent weeks on my tumblr blog and then got banned.

What's the purpose?

3xmedia 01-02-2015 04:39 AM

if you can't afford a domain and quality hosting, then this biz really isn't for you :2 cents:

I'm just looking to put up some very heavily watermarked photos. I also don't intend to post anything naked or pornographic.

It has nothing to do with money. It's just "why bother"?

The Internet is pretty much dying and I do NOT intend to make a "pay site" or go about "blogging" everyday. It's just an easy way of giving someone a place to go when they want to look at my work.

Doggy S 01-02-2015 09:45 AM

own domain is better

You could always use something like CarbonMade, which will host your portfolio online.

Own domain is better. If you can't afford that then...
If you are doing adult sooner or later tumblr will ban you. Not worth it.

Where the hell are you people getting the idea that I can't afford a domain?

15 bucks for a domain and 60 bucks a year for hosting. Someone would have to be homeless or living in a 3rd world nation to not be able to afford that.

brassmonkey 01-02-2015 10:16 AM

lets talk on the pm

You asked for advice. Get a domain and don't pay $15 for it, pay $9. Use Namecheap and get yourself some $40 a year hosting. I've already saved you $26 bucks. There is no such thing as "free".

They're just trolls. Check their post history. They just come out to stir shit when people are too afraid to do so with their real nicks.

That's kind of what I figured. Just a quick look around here and it's obvious that the jizz biz has really gone to shit in the last 10 years. I remember this site in 2001 and the "business to troll" ratio was a lot better back then.

See I'm not convinced that keeping a domain is the best course of action. I'm doing more business face-to-face these days than I am on the net. So for the amount of "can you send me a sample of your work" over the last 5 years leaves me asking "why bother?"

Plus when I consider all the trolling, the theft, the drama and the gossip that goes on it just seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

You picked the wrong board for business.

Use your domain for tumblr.

Its a good way to have your site but no cost.

mineistaken 01-02-2015 11:56 AM

Of course domain, because:
1. You control it and no risk (less stress as well)
2. Once you are retiring, finishing etc you will have some valuable site/domain that could be sold.

1) People who are too lazy to work usually have no money.
2) You reinforced that assumption by starting this thread. Asking people if you should renew a domain or use a free alternative implies that spending $10 on a domain renewal is a major decision for you.

Mr Pheer 01-02-2015 04:01 PM

Running your online business on a domain that you dont own looks about as professional as running a brick & mortar business out of a public storage building.

If you want people to take you and your work seriously, get your own domain. You can host it on tumblr or wordpress.com and I think even blogger if that's how you want to go.

That's because they're stupid. You would think adults in the adult industry could find something better to do than act like children.

There hasn't been a "right board" since 2008 and even back then it was debatable. Henceforth the reason for my question

ErectMedia 01-02-2015 06:07 PM

Basing a business on a free url is the equivalent of running a site on a trademarked domain. May be good for a while but then one day the plug gets pulled and all the traffic you created is gone and out of your control. Buy a domain so if shit gets banned you can redirect the domain to a new set up and not lose the existing traffic you created. :2 cents:

It's their stock reply to anyone who asks about domain and hosting.

I agree with the consensus though, own domain is better.
