Have seen a lot of great movies lately

Being a member of SAG includes benefits of free screeners from studios trying to get their films nominated for awards.

In just the last week or so I've seen:

Gone Girl
The Theory of Everything
The Grand Hotel Budapest
Birdman
Boyhood
St. Vincent

Still have The Imitation Game and Wild

So far I've liked them all but really LOVED Birdman, Boyhood and St. Vincent. I really think Michael Keaton has a shot at winning best Actor in Birdman. Thought Bill Murray was fuckin awesome in St. Vincent as well.

Gone girl was good despite my deep hatred for Affleck.

(Plus you get to see his weiner)

dyna mo 01-05-2015 11:03 AM

birdman swooped in from nowhere, wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.

LAJ 01-05-2015 11:17 AM

I like Affleck... a lot of people could have played that role actually.

The style and content of Birdman blew me the fuck away. I was involved in theatre for many years, albeit on a much lower scale than Broadway but I sooo "got it."

Gone girl probably. Others were semi so-so.

Sid70 01-05-2015 01:56 PM

The Cobbler, dam, gonna be a good one.

Scott McD 01-05-2015 02:09 PM

I watched "let's be cops" last night. Decent, but not quite as good as i'd hoped...

PR_Glen 01-05-2015 02:21 PM

i've only seen st. vincent from that list. it was ok, more manipulative than great though. night crawler was interesting, not something i'd want to watch ever again. The drop was pretty good.

overall this has been a fucking horrible year for movies. I'm sure theres some smaller scaled ones that i've missed still but overall a sequel/remake nightmare...

Loved The Drop and Gone Girl

CaptainHowdy 01-05-2015 02:50 PM

What about "Mr. Turner"?, I'm a Mike Leigh enthusiast ...

Ross 01-05-2015 03:27 PM

I'm gonna watch the Drop, anything Tom Hardy is always great. I recommend checking out Locke, great movie.

Lately I watched a bunch of good movies, forget most of them but Fury and The Equalizer were the pick of the bunch. I watched a random Liam Neeson movie at the weekend, A Walk Among The Tombstones, good film.

The Drop looks good

"Gone Girl" is very good. Intelligent, suspenseful and just twisted. One of the best murder mystery stories I've seen in years.

Based on a true life story, "Unbroken" is good, but is being pitched all wrong. It's not so much an inspirational movie as it is a documentation of all (or at least much) that Zamperini endured. It's dark and sometimes hard to watch. But see it. Jack O'Connell carried this movie well. It may win an Oscar for cinematography and deservedly so.

"The Imitation Game" is superb story telling, and also based on a true life story. The first line in the film is "Are you paying attention?" and that's your queue to do so. Alan Turing was a pioneering computer scientist and what he achieved saved millions of lives and preceded modern technology. Benedict Cumberbatch brings this character to the screen in perfect pitch and this is a story that indeed had to be told. It's my vote for Best Picture (from what I've seen so far).

"Birdman" is about as quirky as you're going to find, giving both Keaton and Norton what may be the best roles of their careers. Yet, this movie was not made for the masses. It's an industry film made to achieve award nominations. And it will get them.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" is overrated in my opinion (and I love Wes Anderson films). But the critics love it. We shall see.

I still haven't seen Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, Selma, Boyhood, Big Eyes, or American Sniper. I'm seeing Mr Turner tomorrow night.

But yeah... there are some really decent films out right now.

The poster says "The Battle of the Five Armies", so there's no way someone paying to see it could be disappointed ...

John-ACWM 01-06-2015 08:51 AM

Fincher did a very good job with Gone Girl, lots of suspense. Affleck was not at all impressive. The Grand Hotel Budapest was a beautiful story, well told, directed, played. Still have to see the rest of that list.

skrog 01-06-2015 09:00 AM

Guardians of the Galaxy was easily the best of 2014. :thumbsup

TeenCat 01-06-2015 09:52 AM

yeah the movie industry is hurting bad because of piracy, but there is tons of new shit coming out weekly ... :2 cents:

His Welsh accent was great in Locke, pretty decent film for such a low budget!

Here's a few films I enjoyed in 2014

The Fault In Our Stars (2014) - This was outstanding!
The Judge (2014) - Robert Duvall & Robert Downey Jr, great cast!
Predestination (2014) - Best Sci-fi film of the year!
A Most Wanted Man (2014) - Philip Seymour Hoffman's last film RIP!
Wish I Was Here (2014) - Another great film by Zach Braff
The Possession Of Michael King (2014) - A great low budget horror
Chef (2014) - Jon Favreau newest film, it was really good!

Scott McD 01-06-2015 01:37 PM

Just waiting on Star Wars in December. Let's hope it's not a steaming pile of shit!

tghy012 01-06-2015 01:41 PM

Read the books decades ago, so had to see what I think is the last one.

My favorite movie for the whole year was Guardians of the Galaxy. The Raccoon was funny and I can't wait to see the next one!

EngineCash 01-08-2015 04:10 AM

Anybody seen Hobbit, Battle of five armies? Any thoughts? :) And yeah, gone girl is great movie... :thumbsup

Sid70 01-08-2015 08:14 AM

Saw the Drop. That's what you get when you don't go to college.
