If your not trading traffic too tgpx is probly a better route.

I would disagree to a point. I can't think of a single big TGP site that runs on SmartThumbs. I can think of a bunch of mid-range CJ sites though. I agree that some of the top CJ TGP sites are/were using SmartThumbs as it's a lot easier to jerk around the surfer to skim traffic. But if it's an actual Real TGP site to keep surfers coming back, some of the top real TGP sites migrated largely from Germes to TGPX. Think Pinkworld.com for example, Library of Thumbs (I think LoT uses it), etc.
One of the other reasons was that SmartThumbs comes designed to jerk surfers around and skim traffic. TGPX requires to add a traffic trading script and apply it after the fact. This has caused a lot of confusion for some folks trying to implement it.
Another one of the problems with TGPX, however, is with multiple page archives. It can be tricky getting multiple-page archives working and a lot of people had some difficulty with it.
Like was said earlier, it depends on the type of site you want to run. One to trade/sell traffic or one to build up bookmarkers and return traffic. Two entirely different approaches.
