Aside form militant/extreme Muslims, I doubt the Islamic world will take much offense because of it, being aware of the attack.

Many Muslims see any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad as disrespectful.... so I wouldn't count on it. The most "appropriate" response in the eyes of some muslims would be to drop a 1000 Megaton NUKE on Paris (around the area of the Eiffel Tower).

So I agree, only a proportionate response will be expected......

on the contrary...

you will agree that radical islam can not win anything with peace and negotiation...obviously this is why they resorted to violence and terrorism...

you said it: "and have ensured more people will hate islam now" and this unfortunately plays right in to the hands of the extremists...growing xenophobia and islamophobia recruit the disillusioned minorities like the 2 idiots who actually shot somebody over a comic...think about it its kinda like free WMD :2 cents:

we are "sending a message" by printing 3.000.000 more comics to people who do not give a shit about the message :1orglaugh the terrorists know we will not do as they say LOL they do NOT CARE about this...they want you to print more comics to promote more violence...they will find 2 more kourachi brother shit heads :2 cents:

the only thing that is going on at the moment is a growing rift between islam and the rest of the world...we are pouring gasoline on a fire we do not want...

everything you say here makes sense but what is the end goal? in the end people will not care as much when governments want to bomb middle eastern countries and even if they recuit 10,000 more people, they'll never be able to compete with government military. all they have is terror. they can continue to kill a dozen here, 100 there then get bombed for the next 20 years. what do they get out of it?

Well, an appropriate response might be a satirical depiction of other religion's gods.

But we have those intent on causing real religious discord and violence -- it serves the parties political ends ...

I don't think these cartoons are tantamount to screaming fire in a theater and should be protected free speech. However, these satirical cartoons are like poking the hornets' nest with a sharp stick too.

Maybe, this is in effort to flush out more terrorists in Paris and the police/army will be ready for them but it is just as likely there will be a revenge attack in another Western capital -- papa get your gun! (The Vatican?)

** To stifle any criticism of leaders is like being in North Korea, freedom of critical speech = death by the government. Death by a religion's decree is the same thing.

the part you're failing to take into account is the fact that the EXACT opposite response would still garner the same reaction. If the rag folded in response to thisattack it's beyond insanely wrong to think that would quell future radical islamic attacks. in fact, it would promote them.

on the one hand I agree with your argument here...bending over like some little bitches because some shit head threatens to kill you ect...knowing fully well the shit head will probably not leave you alone even then...

but the reality of the situation is that the shit head is not interested in the cartoon or peace at all...he is interested in recruiting more people for his shit head cause...this is not easy...unless of course we make it easy for him by being childish xenophobes and giving him ammunition to use against us...the childish cartoon will not offend the normal muslims a lot, but the white peoples reaction to the 15 dead is priceless for the terrorists...pure gold :2 cents:...and all the shit head needed to do was to find just 2 dumb fucks out of 1.5 billion to stoke in to killing somebody

the only agenda the terrorists have is further xenophobia, they thank their imaginary god every time you bomb them, because it kills their real enemy: moderate and non-hating muslim people...they thank their imaginary god every time you further alienate the muslim immigrant community, sending people like the kourachi idiots right in to their hands to fight you on their own soil...

printing the cartoons was, is and will always be a childish response...one does not bomb for peace or troll for peace...

I have no problem with political or religious satire but Radical Islam seems to. So, the fact that the newspaper (or the French government) took no security precautions was asinine. They knew there were good odds of these events happening based on the experience with the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

no it wasn't. the only rresponse that would be effective is a complete lack of response. completely ignore the massacre. it doesn't make the news, no one talks about it, buses keep moving, shitty cartoons keep being published as if absolutely nothing happened.

that, unfortunately, is not realistic.

Wahhabists and other Sunni islamists like the Salafists don't care about the cartoons. or attacks by Israel on palestine. they want to shape a muslim world where there is no place for moderates. finally you are starting to get it.

What you still don't get though is that it's itself a Sunni Muslim concept, there is no Koranic prohibitions against depictions of Muhammad. :2 cents: They created the fire and waited for the gasoline, If it hadn't come they would have made another fire. It's the same thing they did with burqas, shadors, veils in muslims countries. People were already muslims, had been for centuries, and wore no veils. The Sunni ultraorthodox came in and before you know it's an offense not to wear a veil. The only response is to completely ignore not only their threats but their ideas on religion and society.

At the end of the day, the question is simple ... should a small, extreme and subhuman element be allowed to dictate what you can and cannot say. This has nothing to do with Islam. It has to do with lunatics who were known to be lunatics, doing what lunatics do. If it was about Mohammad and insulting Islam, the dudes would not run into a building, take hostages and shoot 4 innocent people well after the fact or execute a random, unarmed cop on the street.

These people are garbage. They should be rooted out and thoroughly destroyed.

These people want to kill you anyway. They want you dead. They want your family dead. They want you living under sharia law and would crucify or behead every single one of you if it was technically possible. Thinking this is about "offending" someone is extremely naive. ISIS has been rolling from town to town murdering innocent men, women and children. What "offended" them? Nothing. The weak want power. They will prey one the weaker to get it until they are stopped.

Arrogant and close minded?

All I said was I thought it was a bad idea because he made a valid point which I considered on its merit alone which is that it again causes offence and will be used as fuel for fire and no doubt terrorist recruitment purposes. Now ask yourself why the Muslim community in the UK and France has been asked to act with restraint in light of the new publication:

BBC News - Charlie Hebdo cartoon prompts restraint call in UK

But sure I never thought these cartoons were a good idea.... even though I've never seen the cartoons - I'm sure they serve no useful purpose and there must be 1000's of better things to joke about. If you had an equivalent publication in the muslim world joking about jews (whatever the background) and with context to their ethnic/religious background they might be offended too. I'm not agreeing with the attacks - just ask what is the point?
