"The movie industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher you get, the whiter it gets," Sharpton quipped in a statement released later in the afternoon.

Sharpton, a critic of the lack of diversity in Hollywood, also announced he was holding an "emergency meeting" next week to address the issue.

"I have called an emergency meeting early next week in Hollywood with the task force to discuss possible action around the Academy Awards," he said.

It's only the second time in two decades this has happened. He needs to realize that they can't just "throw a black actor" in there for the sake of appearances -- although I'm sure the academy has probably done that before.

Hollywood has always been "white".

The past two winners for best Director were Spanish and Chinese. There's plenty of non-white in Hollywood, Al just sees a money making opportunity so he's going to jump on it.

One of the director nominees is Mexican. Last I checked, they're not white.

I'm in a high demographic area, by the beach. My next door neighbors are black, their kids and my kid hang out. Two houses down are Asians. Mexicans everywhere, oh and some Mexican-Americans too.

melting pot is a historically term. it was a phrase used to represent a period of time over 100 years ago. the goal/thinking was a homogeneous society.

the melting pot myth was that, in theory, everyone was welcome, even the tired and the poor. Each would enrich American culture. Each would embrace the idea of a common identity. Each would adopt and eventually achieve the ?American dream? of freedom and prosperity.

The bad part of the melting pot was its rationalization of racism and intolerance. The melting pot metaphor writes off racism as a temporary transition period for minorities.
