Adding random people on LinkedIn - what's the point?

Just deleted 3 people that added me where I have no idea who those people are and that not even remotely work in the same area as i do.

what's the point - is there some contest who has the most connections?

I get a handful every day. People wanting to get an "in" at Google, usually, or asking me to invest in hair-brained bullshit. Had a guy recently who was living in his truck, telling me how he was going to "eat Facebook's lunch."

they don't contact me, they just add me. random people, no agencies or whatever. today one of them was a sculptor from New York... weird.

I hate that crap almost as much as our industry "mutuals" that feel the need to "friend" anyone that asks on Facebook, like they hold some kind of monetary value.

I'm sure he will. Imagine the cafeteria trash cans. They must be full of goodies.

Oh snap. This is going to be the new comedy gold at the office. We already use the phrase "eat Facebook's lunch" for any stupid idea someone comes up with. :1orglaugh That's friggin' great!

Maybe some people treat it similar to facebook - more connections = more exposure etc, better "weight" of profile etc.

The more "dead weight" you have on your profile, the less valuable you are likely to be perceived. If someone just had a bunch of random contacts that didn't tell the right story, "more is better" would flag them as an idiot.

for many years i considered LinkedIn crap and accepted whoever added me - over here Xing.com works way better

but now LinkedIn seems to gain value for me and so i deleted recently like 30% of my contacts

and i wonder if paying would make it even more valuable
