wannaGOFAST - High-Speed Racing - Florida 1/2 Mile Private Runway Shootout

Heading up to Ocala this weekend to see how fast some guys can get their cars up to in the 1/2 mile. It's on a private runway (where John Travolta has a house), and cars routinely get over 200 mph.

Not running my car (2014 Corvette), but just gonna watch some other guys run.

Anyone else going?

I'm running in the Miami ING Marathon on Sunday.... no can do. :(

We didn't go on Saturday, but I was there yesterday for most of the day. I saw the red Lambo go for a swim.

The same guy had a run earlier in the day and he ripped the diffuser off his car halfway down the track. He came back down the return road dragging it. Then, on his next run he had removed the entire bumper and went in the retention pond.

I snapped some pics during his runs... I'll have to see how they came out. I'll download them off my card in a few.

Here are some pics from yesterday... I resized these WAY down from the originals (5472x3648) because there are so many of them. I took about 200 pics total, but here are a few, with my captions...

For the first part of the day, I was about 300 feet from the start line. Most of the cars were spinning their tires even as they passed my spot. It was on a private runway, so it didn't have the grip that a typical race track would have. The AWD cars fared much better on launch than the others.

John Travolta's plane. I think it's a Boeing 737. You couldn't really see his house from where we were, though... (Google Maps image, too.)

This guy was the fastest on Saturday at 233.8 mph. I took these pics after he did a run of 210 mph. Just before we left, he did another run and blew his right front tire as he crossed the line at 225 mph. He was ok, and the car stayed wheels down, but I'm sure he needed a new pair of underwear. He was waaaay down the track so it was hard to see, but it seemed like he spun forever...

And, here are pics of the Lambo that crashed. He did a run earlier in the day with a new Z06. That's when his diffuser came off halfway down the track. I didn't get a pic of the back of his car, but you can clearly see it's off in the 4th pic.

Then, he lined up for a solo run a little later, and all hell broke loose. You can see they removed his entire rear bumper before the run...

Is the video a cellphone clip (shot vertically... I hate when people do that)? If so, I saw that last night, too.

First time seeing that vid... the one I saw was worse, shot vertically on a phone.

I think the guy blowing his tire at 225 mph was much scarier, though... haven't seen any video or pics of that yet.
