Something doesnt seem right buying beer from a brand that also makes car batteries and sliced ham.

pornguy 01-28-2015 07:05 AM

You guys do realize that they buy this in bulk from one of the big makers and slap their lable on it right?

Except they don't make a damn thing, they just label other people's stuff. Usually decent quality or better.

I don't usually drink light beer, but if I did I am sure Kirkland would stand up to any of them, and 99% sure it's made by Anheuser Busch, or whoever makes all the rest of the light beer in America.

Q: Why is American beer like having sex in a boat?
A: Both are fucking close to water.

That's a good thing. They take most of the alcohol out so you're just drinking bubbly piss water but hey - it's not as fattening so you can have an extra helping of cheesy fries.

You also have to drink 3 times as much to feel anything so great marketing I guess. Why sell your customers 1 beer when you sell them 3?

Their Vodka is Grey Goose. Unfortunately I live in Texas where we have to go to dedicated liquor store to buy anything but wine or beer, just like it says in the Bible "Thou shalt not sell distilled beverages under the same roof as thou sellest Croissants and Bacon nor any manner of dog food, nor cleaning products"

thehand 01-28-2015 09:41 AM

I prefer Franks Milk of the Gods.

I realize that is what Kirkland is. But it would be interesting to know what brand it is, and if it is an exact copy of an existing recipe, or an original brew.

I'm sure someone like Molson Coors wouldn't want people to find out Costco is selling Coors Light in a different can for less money.

I guess I better find a source for that, I heard it and repeated it, but it was more like "bottled by". I know they have enough purchasing power to get recipe's customized for a lot of products, even with the original label so I doubt it's identical.

Could even be factory seconds or discontinued sub-brands. Sorry, I repeated hearsay like fact. I haven't tasted it myself and I am not really a vodka connoisseur so wouldn't matter.

There's some discussion here but it doesn't look like anyone is speaking from a position of authority:

Grey goose and Kirkland Signature brand vodka the same?! - Spirits - Chowhound

ITraffic 01-28-2015 10:06 AM

Kirkland Signature Light Beer is a Light Lager style beer brewed by Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe, WI.

Interesting read...the only thing that resembles anything grey goose is the bottle being frosted glass

I would guess they do not make them, but order from various manufactures (ham from ham manufacturer, batteries from battery manufacturer).

Ok, others already covered that :)

Majority of European beer consumed is light. Do not get confused by not having "light" in the name of the label :)

I did not read this particular link, but from what I heard - many people assume that it is grey goose, because they are made by the same company or in the same factory. If it is only that - very ignorant assumption.
Alcohol factories produce various recipes for various labels, private labels included.

Based on the tables here I don't know if that statement is correct. I haven't been to Europe so I don't know what "majority consumed" is, but if it's anything like the exports then no, it's not "light" beer. It may be a light color, but it's not light on calories or alcohol content.

I like this review:

Quote:

First off, if you think about what you're drinking, you should give this a high rating right off the bat. When compared to its competition, this beer is outstanding. It is what it is. It's a cheap light beer, and it is the best in its class. I give this a 4.75/5 as for light commercial beers go. I give it a 3/5 as far as BEER goes. There is better, there is no doubt, but for what it is, it is great. That is all.

Minhas Brewing - the brewer, was Joseph Huber Brewing Company when they bought it in 2006. Their "about us" page gives me the impression they are pricks so I lost any interest in learning more about them or their beer.

I think 5% is the standard and most popular beer in any European country. It is mainstream.
Although there are plenty of 4.6, 3.8 etc. In Scandinavia probably most of the beer is under 4% as an example.

I see that lights (bud, miller) is 4.2%. Not THAT much of a difference from most popular 5%. And again - there are plenty of lower beers in Europe.

So not sure how konrad was surprised about that :)

Baddog will take any opportunity to be a beer snob. Nobody cares about your hipster esque microbrewery loving opinion on beer. This thread is about costco cheap beer. Do you think anyone wants to hear your opinion on "high end" micro brews?

Such a tool

I would love for somebody to do a blind taste test with 100 beer connoisseurs, I bet the results would be hilarious.

Exactly. I have a friend in Wisconsin who runs one of the labeling lines for manufacturer.

Looks like PISS beer to me.

I d rather drink One good beer than 10 of these...

beerptrol 01-29-2015 11:08 AM

Interesting how some of these store brands are made by the name brand guys with just a different label slapped on it!

munki 01-29-2015 01:07 PM

As long as Costco keeps their Jameson price right where it's at I'm a happier camper. Good experience with all the Kirkland labels so far, might give this a try when I'm in a beer mood...
