Amazing............ sweeeeeeet indoor paradise

aka123 01-28-2015 11:08 AM

OK, that is really cool. Not the usual "lame cool" stuff usually posted in here. Apparently it was built for airships.

makeabuck 01-28-2015 11:09 AM

That is super badass! Heck yes.

romeo22 01-28-2015 11:12 AM

Is it really a Nazi hanger? I cannot see why they'd build that. Pre-war, I can see it being used for zepplins but not during the Nazi's time in power.

It was, based on google search. Nazi-Germany had some zeppelins too.

EDIT: You are right, but it is the other way around; old nazi base, but the hangar is modern, and for modern airships.

yeah, I just wiki'ed it ...

"In 1938, Germany began development of Brand-Briesen Airfield for the Luftwaffe. The Red Army overran the site in May 1945, and occupied the site after World War II, adding a second runway and nuclear-resistant command and control facilities for the installed fighter aircraft regiment.

With the reunification of East Germany in 1989/1990, the Soviet Army agreed to return all military bases by 1994. Returned to the Federal Government of Germany in 1992, Cargolifter AG bought the former military airfield to construct airships. They began development of a new construction hall, 360 metres long, 210 metres wide and 107 metres high, which cost ?78 million. At 5.5 million m³ (194 million ft³), it stands as one of the largest buildings on Earth by volume, and is the world's largest single hall without supporting pillars inside. The hangar was commissioned as an airship hangar named Aerium in November 2000, but the airship it was intended to house ? the CL160 ? was never built. CargoLifter went bankrupt in mid-2002."

I discovered it on a travel video that happen to catch my eye on weather.com and the text said "You won't believe what's inside this former Nazi hanger". It caught my eye because I love the WWII stuff.

The video says "This hanger was built in 1938 by the Nazis to house enormous airships". It makes sense because the Nazis had airships, and the Nazis love to build things HUGE.

Here is the video: http://www.weather.com/series/human-...s-always-sunny

No matter who built it... It's freaking awesome. The pictures don't seem to do it justice - you could fit the Statue of Liberty in it.

Give me the real beach with almost no one on it anyday...

Being really pedantic, the Nazi's had one airship, the Graf Zeppelin II which went under the Luftwaffe fleet. The other airships belonged to the Zeppelin company although they did indeed have to fly the swastika for propaganda reasons.

oh wow that's awesome !
Just imagine looking at the hangar from the inside marvelling at the size of it, never mind the beach.

wtf???????

Mutt 01-29-2015 06:07 AM

That's quite amazing. A Malaysian company built and runs it.

Here's what they spent on the place, I would have thought it would have cost more.

According to figures published by the company, Tropical Islands has spent EUR 23 million on further development and expansion work. The original total investment sum announced was EUR 75 million, including a EUR 17 million subsidy from the federal state of Brandenburg.

They lost a lot of money during the first few years, they need over a million visitors a year to break even. After adding overnight lodging business improved and in 2008 they turned a profit.

I bet something like this would do great in the northern US and Canada - if it had a casino included.

fappingJack 01-29-2015 06:11 AM

my jaws dropped. whoever turned that into an indoor paradise is a genius :thumbsup

My friend has a swimming pool with a glass roof in his house. It's a really cool feeling when you're seeming backstroke and watching at the snow flakes that flying down from the sky :)
