A while back in our local city, a cop nearly sideswiped an older dude who was riding a bicycle on the side of the road. Guy on the bike ended up wiping out on the grass boulevard - wasn't hurt...but got up and gave the finger to the cop in the distance. The cop pulled a U-turn...came back and roughed the cyclist up - then hauled him into the station and detained him (no charges were laid).

So...the cyclist sued the cops. The cop was investigated and ended up on "administrative duties" pushing a pencil. Apparently he'd had a history of roughing people up.

Now - I'm no cop lover. It's common knowledge our local Niagara regional force has one of the highest corruption rates in all of Canada. But I also work with cops on a daily basis - and have met many good ones. In fact, several of my co-workers have brothers/uncles/cousins that are cops - and they're good folk, too. My late uncle was a high-ranking RCMP...and I have a neice and nephew who are cops in the Jane/Finch area of Toronto.

But overall - I don't have much use for cops. As an officer of the court myself - I treat them with professional courtesy and respect according to how they treat me - but that's it. Much of the time I go with the assumption they're assholes until proven otherwise, as opposed to the other way around.

Isn't that the sad truth.

As much as I would enjoy the laugh of you pissing off the wrong cop, don't. It's just not worth the effort. If you ever get stopped, just co operate. Keep your hands to your side, don't make sudden movements, answer the questions, and most importantly just keep calm. There's no reason to make a bad situation worse.

Your niece and nephew are earning their paychecks that's for sure. What a shit hole to have to work in. Good for them keeping the city safe from the thug assholes that reside there.

It's not a matter of not cooperating or obstructing or loosing control, it's simply shooting the mother fucking finger at a mother fucking asshole cop!

Yep, I'm sure they both see quite a lot of crap on their patrols. Although I lived in Scarberia in the 80s, I knew the Jane/Finch area quite well and it's always been a zoo. Both are good kids (and highly trained in martial arts, too...lol) - and my nephew is a rather large boy, so he knows how to handle himself.

Even still...I don't envy their jobs.

A long time ago I decided to be polite to any asshole I encounter. Cop, dick in a bar, etc, NO ONE is worth me getting involved in a fight that could turn very violent or myself getting enmeshed in the court system.

Defending myself, different matter. But walking away from conflict is the only way to behave in todays society.

NO. If I can make it to the car I can drive away and continue to have great days in the future. My self respect isn't contingent on the "respect" of assholes.

QFT. Living in New York City I have become a Master at high-tailing it OUTTA THERE if a situation gets bad.

Cops today are para-military units ever since 9/11. Departments are itching to use all that fancy new assault and terrorism equipment the Gov't so generously gave them in the years following Sept.11. This is why you get SWAT units responding to domestic complaints and cops busting down doors like they are in Afghanistan.

Advice: fly under the radar and try to get through life as conflict-free as possible.

The main #1 problem is: who polices the Police? Unchecked power equals (insert worse case scenario here).

Internal affairs?
Anyway - who would police the ones who police the police? And then who would police the ones who police who police the police? :1orglaugh (I lost it there, lol)

Filp off a guy carrying a loaded pistol -- what could go wrong? :2 cents::helpme

Rochard 02-01-2015 01:00 PM

There are always going to be bad cops. No matter what, there are always going to be some "bad apples". Assholes who have power complexes like to be cops for obvious reasons - Not much different from our industry attracting perverts.

I consider myself an "optimistic realist" - I like to see the good in everyone. I am forty-six years old, have had a few run ins with the police (including a felony stop), and I have yet to run into a cop who was a real dick.

Same here.
usually there are people themselves who attracts trouble.
For example everyone knows "the guy" who is always in trouble, always in fights and it is always "not their fault". While you never get in any trouble living in that same neighborhood.

TheSquealer 02-01-2015 01:39 PM

Another rock solid, "how to win at life" strategy brought to you by GFY. I mean, how could this amazing plan possibly go wrong?

The Porn Nerd 02-01-2015 01:43 PM

I once asked a lawyer here in New York if a person could legally go up to a cop, or even say from a distance, "Fuck you." He told me the cop could take those words as a hostile action and arrest you for 'assaulting (verbally) a police officer".

Think about it: if a cop can blow away an innocent civilian because the cop THOUGHT the civilian had a weapon (when in reality it was a wallet, or his ID, or nothing at all) and get away scott free every single time hen how far is anyone going to get challenging them?

Are you saying that they should be punished for that? In that case they would be afraid to shoot even when there was a real gun, which would cost cop lives. And probably more cop lives than the lives of those with "wallets".

Consider yourself fortunate.

Years ago my wife was involved in a minor car accident - she got rear-ended by a guy in a pickup truck at a stop sign while on her way to work. The jerk drove off (probably impaired at the time). Fortunately she got the guy's plate number.

She called the cops to report the accident - gave them all the information. They went to the guy's house and he claimed she'd put the car in reverse (at the stop sign) and backed in to him. Total bullshit, of course.

The (young) cop came to our door - told us what the guy had said - and then accused my wife of lying. "You likely made up the story because you thought your husband would be angry with you for being in an accident," he said. He said this in front of both of us.

I know my wife - and totally believed her story. She had no reason to lie. I told the cop there was no way she was lying...but he wouldn't listen. After a few minutes I'd had enough and told him to "get the fuck out of my house," - and booted him out the door.

It's a pretty safe bet that the guy in the pickup truck had a friend or two on the police force.

Alright. In that case, be my guest. But I bet the next time you are about to, you will think of me, and my handsome, friendly face, and you say to yourself "Gee Whiz, Maybe that Mark Prince fellow is right! (like everything else, ever!)". Then you will put your hand back into your pocket and go about your business, happy in the warmth that my wisdom has saved you from a night in the clink.
