The final tally on Superbowl 49, commercials, stats, etc.

Super Bowl 49 is officially the most watched event is U-S history.

Nielsen ratings says over 114 million people watched the Patriots win -- topping the record of 112.2 million set last year.

It's the fifth time in six years that a Super Bowl game has set a record.

The good news for Canadians is that in two years from now we will (reportedly) be able (allowed) to once again watch the American commercials during the Super Bowl. For those that don't know and are curious, we Canucks were able to switch over to one of the US stations and watch the "good" commercials, but roughly 8 years ago or thereabouts the Canadian cable networks put a stop to it and started simulcasting/overdubbing Canadian commercials, even on the US stations we get here.

Reason; they were missing out on all that fat ad revenue. The thing is, most if not all Canadian viewers don't give a rat's ass about that. We want to watch the damned commercials! Well, apparently our cable networks have switched on the lightbulb and have figured out how to allow us access to them and still make money. (amazing)

I'll add in one stat further --- I believe that Seattle's decision to throw a pass in the final seconds will go down in the books as one of the all-time DUMBEST play calls in NFL history. There, I said it.

Almost forgot....

Each 30 second commercial spot during the game cost a record $4.5 million USD.

Fuck, I keep trying to find a way to make an argument for the call not being that bad but I give up.
Too many holes an every argument that I have typed in and deleted.

Fuck this post, I'm out of here.

Umm, not this Canadian.

I've watched the Superbowl religiously for decades and think it's gotten worse every year for the extra-curricular nonsense -- more especially since the mid-90's. I want to watch the game, not the half time show, the tailgating parties, the never ending commentary, the endless scans of the crowd, etc. I certainly don't care about the commercials.

The Superbowl has become the supporting player to everything else, it's ridiculous.

Suffice it to say, I don't watch the commercials, or the half time shows or other such nonsense. But I certainly watch and enjoy the game, the same as I do during the Grey Cup game.

I can agree with some of what you're saying, but you are in the vast VAST minority on this. People have been complaining by the droves, and loudly, for several years now abou this. The result is that the policy (they say) is going to change because of it.

What they (the cable networks) found was happening is that Canadian viewers were flocking in droves to the US feed stations to watch the game, and it's because of one thing and one thing only... the commercials. They're like the icing on the proverbial cake.

The game itself will always be the main attraction, for me at least. But I want it ALL. The commercials, the half-time, the game, the hype, all of it. And every single Canadian viewer that I personally know who watches the SB resents having their viewing filtered and boring Canadian commercials forced on them. Every one.

Like it or not it's changing.

Oh, I know I am in the minority. But for me, I just do something else when commercials are on, or half time, etc. I don't pay attention to anything beyond the actual game, which is actually a LOT less than everything else. If you record it and skip through all the extra nonsense, you end up with a very lopsided amount of filler versus actual game time.

Football Games Have 11 Minutes of Action - WSJ

What my friends and I do when we get together for a Superbowl Party is PVR it and start watching it 2 hours after actual kickoff. Then we can just skip all the nonsense. There's about 50 of us who get together and do it this way for the past 5 years.

Good friends, good times, good food, and just good football.... none of the extra nonsense :)

Incidentally, there's a sportsbar here in Halifax that is talking about doing it this way next year as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hit $5 million per in the next few years.
