Had to look up the story on this one. Sounds like a sting operation.
Police make 30 arrests for food stamp fraud in North Country - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

Sounds like a store was set up or the owner was set up to buy food stamps. This could be done all over the country. You would see people from all backgrounds.

Probably the safest way people do food stamp fraud is for people to use them to buy sodas and stuff and then go to a crooked store that will buy the goods at half price. That goes on much more. And I don't see how people would get busted for doing that, unless they were followed on camera.

edit: sounds like the owner was busted too. I don't know what they did wrong either.

Another thing they do is sell the food stamp card and the pin for cash. Say you have $200 worth of food stamps on your card. You sell it to someone for $75 cash then once they have spent the money you call and report that you had lost your card. They will give you another and nobody is any the wiser.

Does that mean government is giving too much money to each stamp recipient?
I mean they have to eat anyway, so no sense to sell, except the amount which is more than you need to eat.

Generally food stamp fraud falls into three categories, receiving aid you aren't qualified for. Selling the "stamps" you do receive at a discount for cash. Or finding a retailer that will sell items that don't qualify like beer, etc.

The problem becomes when an alcoholic or addict is getting the cards and then selling them so they can buy more booze and drugs. I don't think there is a problem with a person getting 200.00 for food, then selling the card for 80.00 so they can go buy food.

My point was along the lines that a person has to eat anyway. Lets say you need 200/month for food.
So two scenarios for those receiving food stamps:

1. Buy food that you need for those 200.
2. Sell it for 80 and then buy the food you need for your own 200 in cash.

Where is the business? This would be viable only if you get your food for free...

Or, of course, if you spend less than 200 on your food. In that case we may be back to my other question - maybe 200 is too much.

blackmonsters 02-19-2015 11:23 AM

People have to figure out how to get laundry detergent.

I am not a right winger per se, except for the fact that I am pro "you get what you deserve" and anti "punish the highest earners by jealousy tax and redistribute their hard earned money to the lazies".
Also, moron, I am not an English speaker, a concept that escapes average IQ guys who think they are above average, like you :)

Happens all the time. We had couple of camel jockeys busted for coupon and food stamp fraud few months ago. I think they added "terror sponsorship" charges because they wired money to family members somewhere out there.

MassMarketing 02-19-2015 06:12 PM

Atleast once a month I get someone bugging me while grocery shopping. They always offer to buy my groceries for me and I can pay half price. Drives me nuts.

Normal street price is 50% of the cards value: $200 card goes for $100 cash

Sorry I'm not up on the current street value of a food stamp card.

Just because they are white people, doesn't mean they are bankers and intellectuals. I am not up on food stamp fraud, but i can imagine that people are obtaining the cards through fraud and then selling them at a discount with money being laundered through the store being charged for items that then remain in inventory and are then sold again, or junkies/alcoholics that want booze/drugs more than food, hence the conversion to cash to feed addiction.

Biggest fraud my ass.

Come to my local Walmart any day of the week.

I just watched a five hundred pound black chap buy two carts worth of four hundred dollar groceries. As he was in line he was throwing dollar packs of gum and candy bars in his basket willy nilly..

This is no joke.. At one single checkout line, I counted ten out of ten blacks who were in perfect working condition pay with their ebt card.. And four white people paying with hard earned money.

Every single black person in my city seemingly owns an ebt card. ALL of them could easily get off their lazy ass and start working.

How do I know this.. My lazy ass white sister gets food stamps. She could work, but prefers to look for a free meal ticket.

Just like every single lazy black chappie paying with an ebt card at Walmart. When I say every single blak person I see at the grocery pays with food stamps, I mean EVERY SINGLE BLACK PERSON AT THE GROCERY PAYS WITH FOOD STAMPS.

Not the majority, all of them.

Fucking bums.

Well I guess you'll never hire any lazy blacks on food stamps.
None of them will ever get a job from someone who thinks like you do.

:2 cents:

You might consider that only broke motherfuckers buy food at walmart so WTF did you expect?

Interesting. I've never been to a Walmart. Tell me more. I'm curious to hear more about what it's like.

This is the US and no-one should go hungry. However assistance should be for staples of a good diet not junk. Nothing pisses me off more than paying for gas and watching someone ahead of me pay $10 bucks for a single slice of pizza and an energy drink.

But the pizza would have to be cold to be ok to buy with food stamps.

can't happen that way, at least in most states. the card has a PIN. report your card stolen and claim you didn't use it and adios benefits.

I guess i should just say that you report the card as lost, but don't tell them that you hadn't used the benefits. They will give you a new card and give you more benefits the next month.

Of course if you "lose" your card every month they will likely get suspicious.

Fraud

Fraud is about 5% of the program.

That store if it's selling single slices of pizza and it's hot isn't properly working the program as you can't buy prepared foods.

The stores buying cards or selling illegal items are usually busted by undercover work. A friend of my girlfriend used to go into liquor stores and convenience stores and bust them when they sold her liquor or other not qualified items. She's pretty attractive so the store owners probably figured she couldn't be a cop.

PornoMonster 02-21-2015 02:02 AM

You can get all the FREE or CHEAP food from churches and food banks you want here. People sell the food stamps like everyone else is saying 50 cents on the dollar.

What the Big time Fraud stores are doing is they are the Ones buying the cards.
Customer comes in, says they have $700 on the card. The store rings up $700 in Fake food, and gives the customer $300 - $350 in cash...

Another way....
Had one guy here in town was buying so many peoples cards that he funded his entire restaurants food supply....
