How many of your fix and repair your own stuff?

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...ea8bdd65505a8a

I have tools for everything, even to work on circuit boards. I change my own oil, spark plugs, but I'm letting a friend do my cam job on my Harley. Yesterday I serviced the K&N air filter on my Road King. I'm even making my own handle bars for my Dyna Lowrider. I weld, I turn a wrench, I enjoy doing it. Just wondering who else does?

slapass 03-05-2015 03:45 PM

Not as a hobby but I have rental property so once in awhile I have to chip in.

Vendzilla 03-05-2015 03:47 PM

LOL, can you pick out the GFY swag?

aka123 03-05-2015 03:48 PM

I fix only the stuff I have stolen from others. But yes, I repair stuff. At least some stuff.

Thanx, I have a ATV, it's not in the picture, this only shows part of my garage, it's a 4 car garage. I have two more motorcycles in there and a 4x4 pickup and a car

clickity click 03-05-2015 03:59 PM

I do nothing. I could but it bores me. Why do the work when you can pay a greasemonkey to do it.

Edit: Actually I have better things to do. I would prefer to pay others to fix my shit and save me time.

Choopa Phil 03-05-2015 04:09 PM

I love working on cars. Im actually in the process of demodding so its not as fun. But will hopefully be starting on a new project soon once these parts are sold

I have a fridge in my garage that's full of beer and a couple bottles of Sailor Jerry Rum for those that appreciate it.

Not just fixing , but creating as well.

StinkyPink 03-05-2015 04:38 PM

I am VERY hands on, with almost everything. It's cheaper, and with the help of the internet it really makes things so much easier than back in the day.

Sailor Jerry :thumbsup

Elli 03-05-2015 04:57 PM

I have good intentions. I have a coffee mug I've intended to fix for three years now, but haven't yet. I've also intended to put new door knobs on my kitchen cupboard. The knobs are still in their bag, in one of the cupboards. I'm a "one day" putterer, but not a today one. :)

SilentKnight 03-05-2015 04:57 PM

Depends on what needs fixin'. I have enough tools in the garage to open a small hardware store. Inherited a lot of 'em from my dad when he closed his renovation biz.

Finding the time is the toughest thing.

It gives me a sense of satisfaction and also i know the job is done right. Paying people to do a job and ending with half-assed results is so frustrating.

For example, I had to wait an hour and a half for an oil change at the dealer today because they were having trouble getting the oil filter off because the last time one of their garage monkeys did it they forgot to lube the threads.

The only reason i let them do it is because i get 3 years free service. Then they have the nerve to tell me i only need to bring it in every 16000 km. They didn't like the fact i was getting it done every 5k.

As soon as my free oil changes are over ill be doing them myself.

If you dont have time i can see why you wouldnt bother. I seem to have nothing but free time after i quit drinking.

Ross 03-05-2015 05:21 PM

I don't own many tools, I know my limits and it's not much. Basic stuff I don't mind doing but anything I'm not comfortable with I "call the guy"

BlackCrayon 03-05-2015 06:13 PM

too many people think they can fix stuff and sometimes they can but many times, do it wrong not to mention, unsafe. living in the burbs i see so many people changing their own oil or doing their own brakes changing their own tires in angled driveways with no safety jacks. even with safety jacks doing work in an angled driveway is not a good idea.

Rochard 03-05-2015 06:16 PM

Depends on what it is.

I have an old truck and when I first bought it I did what I could to make it better, installing a new grill and bumper, fixing a few things that were broken. I used to do the work on my Mustangs too, complete tune ups, changed spark plugs, etc. But I would hardly call myself an auto mechanic. I no longer do my own oil changes, so oil filters and air filters get done down at Jiffy Lube.

I most of the stuff around the house, lots of yard work (no landscaper for me!) and of course anything computer related. These days I do a lot of stuff with bikes - I'm into cycling. Right now I have a Specialized that is a few years old and needs some upgrading so I plan on taking it off the road for a bit and redoing everything with newer components.

Spunky 03-05-2015 06:21 PM

I work with my hands all week,I'd rather pay somebody to fix my vehicle if needed.I do repairs on my computers though

crockett 03-05-2015 06:40 PM

[This person is on your ignore list, if you wish to read he repairs his own stuff click here]

timmyc38 03-05-2015 06:43 PM

I enjoy fixing anything that breaks If I dont know how, there is a youtube video for it

If I ever decide to drink, I know where to go for a good time. Booze and all that power between your legs. Hot dayum. :winkwink:

TTI-Rich 03-05-2015 06:55 PM

I've done a LOT of work on crappy cars, mostly because I couldn't afford a non-crappy car. Now I just pay some guy.

VladS 03-05-2015 07:03 PM

I fix people's scripts and code custom ones on a daily basis if that counts :thumbsup

Each to their own, I personally love pulling my cars apart, modifying them / fabricating parts etc, nothing like it.

bronco67 03-05-2015 07:15 PM

I stopped working on my own cars when I couldn't find the spark plugs anymore.

In the Navy I was an electrician and mechanic, but I try to do as little of that as possible now. I've worked on diesel engines, air brakes and hydraulic systems on garbage trucks. I'm glad I don't get home with grease stains so deep in my fingernails that it stays there for weeks. Happy to sit in front of a computer.

Penny24Seven 03-05-2015 08:00 PM

dude you made this same thread before to brag about how you can fix shit LOL I thought I was reading an old thread when I was reading this one. We get the point. If shit breaks you da man, RESPECT

CDSmith 03-05-2015 11:21 PM

I worked the trades for a lot of years, painting, built fences, decking, even a little roofing way back when. Industrial electronics was my one credit but after college I really did nothing with it. These days as a revenue property owner I have to do the odd thing here or there, but because of my deteriorating back my days of spending hours hunched over a work bench or crawling under a vehicle are long behind me.

Masturbation is a much more important activity indeed and a much better use of your time. :thumbsup

I might have, but it felt good to clean up my garage a little and I made some new handle bars for my Dyna. I like to know the talents of my friends and fellow GFY'ers. I didn't know Bronco had talent! I have worked on just about everything. I have a inch lb torque wrench for working on automatic transmissions. I have micrometers and 3 chop saws. I have 2 sets of Oxy Acetylene and a mig welder. I love to work on things.

I got a lot of these tools from my Stepfather when he passed 10 years ago. I have decided I need to work on building things more. I want to make a 4 poster bed out of steel! That's next!

atom 03-06-2015 10:35 AM

I have a shitload of tools and used to do anything and everything I could. Welding, electrical, engine, construction etc.

With how work is going these days I just don't have the time anymore. My personal zen is fishing, when I do get free time I would rather be on the lake than tackling a project. My son until recently had a GMC jimmy, we would work on that together. Now that he got a civic there are no more car problems.

I did re-roof my house this last fall and when it was done I realized I am not as young as I used to be.... Sore for a full week, roofing is a young mans game.. My wife wants a new kitchen in 2015 so we will see what happens there.

i cant afford any stuff to fix... :(

So I just it replace with brand new....

Antonio 03-06-2015 11:58 AM

I change a lightbulb occasionally, tried wiring my new stove simply because I didn't want to wait 2-3 days for an electrician to come, asked GFY for help ... and some 6 months, three burned plugs and several shorts later, I called an electrician to fix it. He charged me $7.

calling myself a hobbyist is an understatement to say the least as I have so many interests kicking around these days. I tend to have a fascination with building things and avoiding short cuts, i'll normally read about 2 or 3 books on any given subject before I start spending money on them.

I have never been into cars at all but I have become a bit of a fanatic about motorcycles in the last few years. I am truly a novice mechanic and still building up my tools for my garage but I love it. I still need to learn more about the electrical side of things but I'm slowly getting there with some of the more simple adjustments.

Working on Motorcycles is new to me, I have worked on just about everything else. Getting the right tools are important. I wish I have room for a full motorcycle lift, but right now because my daughter is staying with us till she gets her feet on the ground. Maybe when she gets her own place I can find the room, they have one at Harbor Freight for under $500

SongRider 03-06-2015 01:02 PM

I grew up having to fix/maintain what I had or just not have it...

I also learned to love the way things worked - "The Gizmo-ness" as Indian Larry put it. ( If you don't know who Indian Larry was ~ GOOGLE).

That carried in to my adult life as well... I still Maintain most everything we own... From Motorcycles to Cars and heaters to putting up a fence or building a barn... :thumbsup

izombie 03-06-2015 01:40 PM

I have worked doing computer hardware and software repairs for over twenty years so I of course do that myself, but I know almost nothing about cars or other handyman stuff. I do repair my bong myself when it springs a leak though!

nico-t 03-06-2015 02:27 PM

do alot of stuff myself when it comes to cars, it's pretty easy and bit of a hobby (when i have the time). Biggest repair was a blown head gasket, you gotta disassemble (and reassemble) half the engine...

Planning on doing a little project this year but time is always the one thing that's missing

Wendy-Etology 03-06-2015 02:34 PM

i do my own break and oil change on my car, thats about it.

seeandsee 03-06-2015 04:20 PM

I do it, but i admit i need to learn much more

Andreweb 03-07-2015 12:30 AM

There is no thing that I can't repair or done ! I am doing all works by myself I am a handyman ! I even do all the mechanical stuff at my cars , construction works and everything !

CarlosTheGaucho 03-07-2015 01:52 AM

Well I really don't enjoy this, there's always a hundred other things I can do in my free time (and that I will enjoy and am better at alike) plus I am happy to pay for services done right, so no thanks.

SekobA 03-07-2015 09:14 AM

I can change the lights nothing else
