Every day this year should be a celebration of the Dead's genius, thank you for posting!

I will see that and raise you two more...

MediaGuy 03-13-2015 08:58 PM

Ok, here's two better - a Space Jam with I Know You Rider - (not Europe but hey I only started following them in the 90s :) )

Peace.

:D

Far-L 03-14-2015 11:30 AM

My first show was 79 but as far as I am concerned it was never about when or how many it was, is, and will always be about the music, the song writing, the willingness to improvise and invent. Tours were like vintages and each had their own terroir.

I also love what others have done with the songs...

from my personal favorite bootleg tape back in the day! :thumbsup

Winterland 10/17/74

Another one of my favs. :thumbsup

Unfortuantely I couldn't find China Cat/I Know You Rider in one clip without having to post the whole show.

jimmycooper 03-14-2015 02:41 PM

Far-L,

are you going to Chicago? have an extra ticket???

marcop 03-14-2015 05:11 PM

There's a bar/restaurant in San Rafael, Marin Co. (where the Dead were from) called Terrapin Crossroads--it's owned by Phil Lesh. I've been there twice in the last year when visiting friends in the area, and it's a very cool place... saw Phil Lesh playing with his son's band one night, and was impressed that people on the patio were openly smoking weed and no one was hassling them.

I am still hoping to find tickets myself... :Oh crap

However, rumors are flying hot and fast that more shows will be added, including one in Santa Clara.

That "happy jam" right before it crosses over into the "Rider" is just one of the most stunningly beautific musical interludes I have ever heard. It just pretty much brings tears of joy to my eyes every time.

Fuck Santa Clara! First the Niners, now the Dead?

Hopefully they'll do it in SF where the Giants play. That place has a lot of character. It would certainly be interesting to see what the scene would be like in McCovey's Cove during the show.

Agreed. I had to find that exact version. Winterland 10/17/74 and Cornell 5/8/77 were my two favorite tapes.

Man, I really haven't listened to the Dead for years until tonight, maybe since '97 or '98, and I must say that while the ease of access to all their shows on Youtube is awesome, it can be a bit overwhelming. I'm not sure what the good shows are anymore except for those two.

Remember trading tapes in the mail? Waiting and waiting to get what you had hoped would be a higher quality copy of one of your favorite shows but only to find out that it's worse than the one you already have! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

I know the Winterland show is famous, but it makes me wonder if I mainly liked 5/8/77 because I had a high quality tape of it back in the day. Is it a famous show? Or was it just famous to me and my friends because we all had a high quality recording of it on tape?

Cornell is one of the most popular shows/tapes out there. Excellent high energy show. One of my first and favorite tapes.
I remember the agony of snail mail trading. I was once on a Dead chat and some kid was bitching about slow download speeds. All the old timers schooled him about what we used to go through to get hissy cassette tapes. It is great to have so much so easy these days.

The one time I would say the bigger the venue the better...
