I'm not so sure about that. you sound as if nuclear retailation is a foregone conclusion and knowing what i know about military strategy, there are always several different scenarios planned out to choose from.
the other problem with this is you can count on ANY nuke device detonating being from Russia, not necc. directly, but some of that [unaccounted for] Russian nuclear material will ultimately get to the wrong people and they will make a dirty nuke out of it, which i think is more certain than a thermonuclear or wtf ever the mushroom cloud one is.
but yeah, terrorists, with the money they are acquiring, will get nuclear material at some point.

Well that would be the trick, to make it appear as if it wasn't them, but when the dust settled, we would know by the signature of the bomb where it came from. The thing is Russia wouldn't be dumb enough to do it in the US, they would pick a low tier Nato ally.
There are certain reasons we don't listen to hardliner war mongers like John McCain or Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu. Both would get the world blown up.
It's like in Ukraine.. It's not Nato being weak allowing Russia to do what it wants. It's Nato being smart and understanding what full support could trigger and is Ukraine worth that. Ukraine tried to play both sides of the coin, they tried to be buddy buddy and not upset Russia while trying to cuddle up to Nato. They are not a clear or trusted ally therefore they are not worth the risk of all out war.
This worked against them, and Russia pounced on it. Russia in the mean time gets one step forward while taking 2 steps backwards. Ukraine was not worth the escalation risk for Nato but it was a great way to weaken Russia economy. Russia gains a military base and in the process further isolates it's self and seriously harms it's economy.
Nato wouldn't allow the same to a Nato member and Russia knows not to step over that line, just like Nato understands not to step over the line by sticking troops in Ukraine.
It's all a chess game and a nuke going off by way of Russia in the US or any core members of Nato isn't gonna happen. :2 cents:
