I don't think its a box - isn't it a part of a fence or a gate? The handle suggests that it would be very heavy so there's not enough room in the box to carry something so heavy that would warrant the giant steel handle.

So my guess is that this is part of a heavy fence or a gate. The little trap door might be a part of a locking mechanism, or maybe concealed the locking mechanism on the inside.

Seems to have been part of something else, judging by the extra metal pieces on the sides. What ever it is, it looks pretty old.

Where did you get it?

TimS 03-17-2015 12:44 PM

Is it burned black on the inside or have charring on the inside?

Harmon 03-17-2015 01:05 PM

It's not mine so as far as charring goes, it does appear that it may be or maybe just stained from something it contained.

Here is one on eBay, but from the description you can see that they have no clue what the hell it is either. 2 Antique Primitive Wood Spice Box Boxes Iron Handle | eBay

My thoughts exactly. Why such a sturdy, blacksmithed steel handle? Unless you were using it to transport gold bars or something, it just seems like overkill

For hot coals.

Yep, one of the first ones on hot coals.

mineistaken 03-17-2015 03:48 PM

Part of the door and the inside space is for leaving notes (you arrive and nobody at home etc)? :)

brentbacardi 03-17-2015 04:10 PM

So why carry hot coals though? I've lived on this earth 28 years and never once needed to carry a hot coal.

You're partially correct Mark.
Its actually Al Gores Social Security Lock Box.:1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

When Al Gore was running for President in 2000, one of the linchpins of his campaign was that he would take the entitlement trust funds and put them in a "lock box," thus preventing Congress from raiding the funds to pay for its pet projects at the expense of future generations.

"I will keep [Social Security] in a lockbox. The interest savings, I would put right back into it. That extends the life for 55 years. I am opposed to a plan that diverts 1 out of every 6 dollars away from the Trust Fund. It would go bankrupt within this generation."

"Putting both Social Security and Medicare in an iron-clad lock box where the politicians can't touch them -- to me, that kind of common sense is a family value."

With coals? I just turn a knob. But if you like playing with hot coals, go for it!

scarlettcontent 03-18-2015 08:14 AM

spice box

It is CyberSEO's brand new coal box. If you look carefully enough, you can see iBox printed on the side. :)
