RIP Internet Explorer

Bye Bye Internet Explorer. Never really used it anyways. I was a Netscape Navigator type in the earliest days.

The Internet reacted with a mixture of glee, sarcasm and a little sadness this week after Microsoft revealed plans to retire its much-maligned Internet Explorer web browser.

Microsoft says it's in the process of developing a new web browser, temporarily titled Project Spartan, which is slated to launch with its upcoming Windows 10 operating system. The yet-unnamed browser is expected to offer a lighter, more efficient interface that's more in line with current trends.

The 20-year-old Internet Explorer brand is expected to fall by the wayside, though it won't be discontinued entirely. Microsoft is expected to make it available online for users who have applications or tools specifically rooted in the browser's functionality.
Full story.

Good riddance.

All my dreams have finally come true! :thumbsup

Isn't it something like 50% of PC users that use IE? They'll probably keep using it for years without updates.

pornmasta 03-18-2015 07:58 PM

hmm this can be a problem with some browser based softwares (submitters softwares for example)

lezinterracial 03-18-2015 08:06 PM

May be a good idea for Microsoft to cut a deal with Firefox. Tell Firefox that they will package their Browser with Windows 10, If they make Bing the default search engine.

VikingMan 03-18-2015 08:11 PM

you gotta be a fucking retard to use IE, that shit is........shit

In theory, it sounds good.

But I'm sure MS would find a way to fuck up the Firefox integration - turn it into bloatware.

Spunky 03-18-2015 08:42 PM

Could never seem to get that browser to work properly on my machines, adios

crockett 03-18-2015 08:43 PM

The truly sad part of this is M$ seems to believe it's just a stigma about a name vs a bad product. If they spent time making a "working" browser maybe they wouldn't have to look for a new name..

My bet is their "new browser" will just be a re-branded IE with all the same compatibility problems.

If that is true then it must be on 98% of all American's computers!

MakeMeGrrrrowl 03-18-2015 09:14 PM

It's been dead. No loss.

Sunny Day 03-18-2015 09:24 PM

IE crap

I just love it when I need to fill out a form for a business or government agency and you can only use IE.

I wanted to fill out a form for a state agency and their requirements are:
MS Windows 7 - must have Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)
MS Vista - Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), and Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)
MS XP - Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), and Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)
MS XP Tablet - Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) and Internet Explorer 7 (IE7)

Using an older version than those listed above can cause difficulties such as: data not displaying on part or all of the screen, buttons and icons disappearing, and blank windows on the screen. Each supported browser requires installation of the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.4.2 or above.

WTF?

mineistaken 03-18-2015 09:38 PM

Well it is just the name. They could have done the same new browser and kept the name. Just like Opera did for example.
And then Seth would not say "Good riddance" but instead would hate on it just because it kept the IE name :)

NETbilling 03-18-2015 09:39 PM

I wish it was RIP Microsoft

Acepimp 03-18-2015 09:59 PM

Excellent news! IE always was a giant piece of shit, especially before MS adopted the concept of browser tabs.

AllAboutCams 03-18-2015 11:03 PM

fitzmulti 03-18-2015 11:19 PM

Why? I think they will make yet another version of Internet Explorer, change the interface and give it some new name. In other words, nothing will change.

Look Chang 03-19-2015 03:25 AM

How will I check my CCBill stats without IE ? :Oh crap

No, their new browser with Cortana integration looks much better than Firefox.

It stuck around as long as it did due to people who weren't really into computers and the web much...and simply didn't know any better than to use IE. If it had been a stand-alone browser and not bundled into Windows as the default browser...it never would have survived long.

mikesouth 03-19-2015 04:31 PM

yup slap a coat of paint on it give it a new name and spend millions on marketing...instead of spending millions on making it right...Thats microsoft for ya...

izombie 03-21-2015 08:14 PM

I remember back in the mid 1990's after IE had been launched I was working in a University IT shop, and Microsoft sent a representative to visit us to get our feedback on IE. Me and several coworkers sat in this meeting ripping on why we hated Internet Explorer and many other Microsoft Products, and this guy sat there and wrote everything we said down in his notebook. At the time IE hadn't been too well received as Netscape was still king, but the next year IE rolled out a much improved version and began to gain market share. So Microsoft was smart in listening to us and many other IT department frustrations to build a better product and conquer the browser world for several years.
