Is that a coincident that the happiest are the countries with the highest taxes and government health care?

no because people don't have to work hard to get anywhere in those countries. everything is handed to them if they want it.

the study was based on division of people by government and boundaries with the assumption we are all supposed to score high on a judgemental happiness test scale and also compared to others in a very general way.

fundamentally flawed study. i don't disagree with them doing the research, research leads to better research but let's not think this study gets much of anything right.

Have you tried living anywhere else for a substantial period of time? I think that is a pretty big blanket statement to make. I've lived in 3 different countries for a substantial period of time and wouldn't say "I couldn't be happier" because I know most likely I could be if I lived somewhere else.

I am however very happy living in Canada right now, especially with summer coming but I know for a fact there are other places out there I'd enjoy myself more and have less things to worry about.

Living in one of the most expensive places to live in the world doesn't make me happy,we are taxed to death out here in BC

I think a lot of it has to do with environment more than the Country. I have visited lots of places around the world. I think I could live in any of them and be happy if I had the people close in my life with me. Having a circle of friends and family who I love and all love me back is what makes me happy.

Well, there are LOTS of countries that are taxed less, but also your income would be much less, so it is not just a bout tax rate, but about bottom line what you have left after the taxes and your purchasing power with that.

Of course, that being said, you can not be happy when you have a progressive income taxation - jealousy tax where the harder you work the more you are being punished by higher percentage tax bracket.

I've been in Copenhagen (Denmark) and I didn't like the city much but it's the city where cars are very rare and main transport vehicle is bicycle. Everyone has at least one (and many have more than one bicycle). Riding bike everywhere you go would make you feel good. Most of the Danish people are really good and healthy looking and bicycles sure help to keep you fit. Also that's the country where weed is almost legal and it's the country where every 2nd person takes "medications". If you mix all these factors with free public healthcare and free education - you'll get one happy country.

People in Holland are not so happy these days. I kept hearing this phrase over and over:

"Holland is no longer a country. It is now a Corporation."

Taxes and limited work hours and incentives are killing the Dutch spirit.

Most of the countries on that list get very cold during the winter, that would not make me happy.

I have lived in another country - Canada, in fact, outside of Montreal. And come to think of it, I couldn't have been less happy in Canada. The country itself was nice, but I was a teenager, it was cold there, and I had moved away from all of my friends.

For me, I am happy because I am an optimistic person in general. Give me a roof over my head, a decent car, a bike, and a basketball and I'm as happy as a camel on humpday. I don't need much.

so the plan is to send all the miserable Americans to Denmark, where they'll instantly be happy.

....that said a lot of people are content with what they know about rather than reaching out to find out whats out there. I know just too many people who've hardly spent a month outside their home country in their entire lifetime.

I know people who think staying in a $300 room in Vegas or Dubai for one night makes them a baller and their little penis grow. They also take tourist double decker bus with free earphones for a day and say "I was there".

Having said that, you can have a person who has *actually* travelled globally but doesn't have the intelligence, education and understanding to interpret or make something of what they're seeing or even be enriched by the experience....

I suppose it's all about WHERE in Canada one lives. I'm pretty happy where I am, basically speaking. Lower cost of living than most of the rest of the country, a bit long in the winters but I really don't mind winter having growing up playing hockey, walking snowbanks and building snow forts. Plus I'm never one to let weather dictate my mood.

But in contrast all of my relatives from Toronto, and in fact nearly every person I've ever met from Toronto, are very high strung, almost all suffer from allergies, they are a bundle of nerves. Most do not or did not strike me as 'happy'. Met dozens to Torontonians down in Mexico years ago, did not get a friendly vibe from any of them. Is it smog inhilation or something in the water? The sky-high cost of living? Couldn't say.

Yet one or two here on this board have said TO is a terrific place to live. Go figure.
