Germanwings Pilot Was Locked Out of Cockpit Before Crash in France

PARIS ? As officials struggled Wednesday to explain why a jet with 150 people on board crashed in relatively clear skies, an investigator said evidence from a cockpit voice recorder indicated one pilot left the cockpit before the plane?s descent and was unable to get back in.

A senior military official involved in the investigation described ?very smooth, very cool? conversation between the pilots during the early part of the flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf. Then the audio indicated that one of the pilots left the cockpit and could not re-enter.

?The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer,? the investigator said. ?And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer.?

He said, ?You can hear he is trying to smash the door down.?

While the audio seemed to give some insight into the circumstances leading up to the Germanwings crash, it also left many questions unanswered.

you would think there would be a secret way to override the lock on the door

Think about that for a minute...

crockett 03-25-2015 08:58 PM

Seems post 9/11 cockpit doors do their job.

Phoenix 03-25-2015 09:03 PM

I guess they need a new rule...no one alone in the cockpit..if one pilot leaves a stewardess must be there just in case

RummyBoy 03-25-2015 10:11 PM

They should send the NTSB and do another episode of plane crash investigation...

With the slow crash decent, heart attack/health problem sounds most feasible :(

That already IS a rule. Rules get broken though.

Except that the plane when cruising like that is most likely on autopilot to begin with.

Correct. No one is allowed to stay alone in the cockpit. The whole thing doesn't smell good. I wonder if airlines companies do an extensive personal records look up before their hire a pilot? After all, they got the biggest weapon in their hands.

Booze
I hate to say but I've been on some of these european domestic flights and I've noticed a couple of times the pilots drinking wine and looking halfway plastered.

My theory is that pilot 1 went back to get another bottle and pilot 2 passed out.

My sis is a pilot and she says there is no way of overriding the locked door to get into the cookpit..i trust her...

Well that's great then..... the cockpit door did its job.

TeenCat 03-26-2015 02:43 AM

once again, why there is no burned land on the crash site? :2 cents:

no burned land, no fuel in the plane when it touched the ground? then how is that possible? :2 cents:

the best answer is probably that they forget to fill the tank

Well said - they probably visited the crash site and left without filling the tank...

read about it this morning - the A320 cockpit door has a code lock for emergencies so that it can be opened from outside (the code changes all the time)

BUT: that can be disabled from inside for 5-20 minutes

so IF the second pilot decides to lock himself in and crash the plane, he can do it and no one can do anything against it.

and yes, we can thank the terrorists for that

LetterTwenty7 03-26-2015 04:37 AM

whatever it is, is it really important now after all those people died?
it's just sad...

BaltimorX 03-26-2015 04:41 AM

I would suggest the following. One pilot could went out to wc and another pilot who stayed in
the cabin, could got heart attack and all... If the door to the cabin is available to open only from inside (ps: i'm not sure but as i know after 9/11 this is necessary security measure), then everything is explained...The pilot who went out, can't open the door in order to return back and all ...it's a crash...

MaDalton 03-26-2015 04:49 AM

they are just confirming it on TV - co pilot locked the door and crashed the plane

it is completely silent in the cockpit, no word was spoken the last 10 minutes, you hear the other pilot trying to break in, the last seconds you hear screams - people knew they were going to crash

it is extremely important - if it was a technical fault you want to avoid that it happens again

iwiiiiiiiiii 03-26-2015 04:55 AM

they just released that they are now focusing on a voluntarily act..... :(

The pilot intentionally wanted to blow it up. Here is the latest:

I still say they were drunk.

Pilot 1 passed out at the wheel.
Pilot 2 forgot the secret code to let him back in the cockpit

With all the bullshit of plane accidents and other assorted bullshit these days the solution is to travel by boat and bring your own inflatable lifeboat.

You know, the second pilot who has crashed the plane was a terrorist. So yes, you we ca thank the terrorists for that.

TeenCat 03-26-2015 05:38 AM

someone on the plane got "chaotic", stewardess cannot help, pilot wanted to calm situation down, got taken as hostage, imho even small bomb like lighter may make hole into the windows then the pressure got down, pilot got treats if copilot will not let them in to kidnap the plane bomb will be activated, copilot instead of giving plane to hands of terrorists so they can target any bigger city, decided to get down and meanwhile emptied the wings from fuel to lower the damage on the ground ... if not like that, at least good plot for movie :winkwink: r.i.p. at the first place anyway ...

Co-pilot went to the bathroom, came back found the door wouldn't open when punching in his pin, it was bolted from inside. 90% chance suicide.

MaDalton 03-26-2015 05:46 AM

for now no one can say why the co pilot did it - the rest seems to be clear now

but if it was something political/religious, it makes no sense without someone taking responsibility

otherwise it's the same as someone steering his car into a bridge

I don't think so. I think the motherfucker just wanted to kill himself along with 149 passengers and crew members. Who said that terrorists must always be radical Muslims?

TeenCat 03-26-2015 05:48 AM

Nope. The Saudi guys behind 9/11 did not take a responsibility for that. Survived Boston terrorist has denied everything as well. There are many more examples of terrorist acts nobody has took any responsibility for :2 cents:
